York Staters posted an interesting article last December written by the always engaging Curt and Toni Feldmann, local proprietors of Skaneateles Hotel and Skaneateles Suites, bringing to our attention the difficult, and sometimes controversial pronunciation of proper name Skaneateles. Curt and Toni, both interesting in their own right (those who know them know this), hopefully are in agreement themselves concerning one pronunciation or another. The most interesting way that I’ve heard the name pronounced comes from the radio ads of Chip Davis of Skaneateles Jewelry. I never realized that so many syllables could be squeezed out of a single word until I heard Chip pronounce it!

Follow up to York Staters is another version from Skaneateles Suites Blog. In part it says:
Picture this: A charming turn-of-the-last-century Village by the Lake. One of the Finger Lakes in Central New York that is.
Trouble is, how do you pronounce it? It all started before the American Revolution when the local Iroqious Indians labeled our crystal blue waters “Long, Beautiful Lake” which in Indaian parlance was “Skaneateles”.
