Last year, during a regular trip to Bed Bath & Beyond, Heidi Stregiel spotted a display of pink Everlast boxing gloves. She decided to buy a pair. That single purchase sparked a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, an event that Stregiel, a kickboxing instructor at the Skaneateles Community Center (wiki) hopes to repeat - and improve - in October, known nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “It was fast and furious all at once,” Stregiel said of last year’s fundraiser. “It took off really well.” Stregiel’s second annual Kick Cancer Wednesdays begin Oct. 3 and end Oct. 31. On the month’s five Wednesdays, the community center will sell paper cutouts of pink boxing gloves. The gloves will be hung on two walls - one for cancer survivors, one in remembrance of those who have passed away. They will sell for $1 each, with all money going to weCare, a new Skaneateles-based cancer support group. The fundraiser has a deep personal connection for Stregiel, whose mother-in-law, Marilyn, passed away in December 2006 at the age of 63, following an 18-year battle against breast cancer.
