Though Linda Ober may live to regret the day that she placed herself right smack in the middle of the Skaneateles village scuttlebutt (or should I say, remember the good ol’ days of solitude), you can now find her spending much more of her time at ‘village central’ in her self-described Newspaper Nook at 2 Fennell Street, office No. 210. Yes, this is the new and improved office of the Skaneateles Journal as of the end of October 2007! Why would you want to find Linda in her new office you ask (besides the fact that she is obviously a terrific reporter and editor in general)? Well, I would boldly venture a guess that she would be interested in hearing all of the inside news (gossip, dirt?) that you can throw in her direction concerning the comings and goings of businesses, people, visitors, etc in Skaneateles! Just remember to say off the record when you’re filling her in on how neighbor Fred looks both ways before dashing to retrieve his newspaper at 5am in his Fruit of the Loom briefs! Unless you have good pictures.
What you may not know about Skaneateles Journal is that it’s fairly new to Skaneateles. Its first issue was actually printed June 21, 2006! Seems like the paper has been around a lot longer than that, doesn’t it?
According to Linda:
We started the paper because we felt that there was a good deal of news that wasn’t being covered in Skaneateles, everything from town, village and school board meetings to the arts and business. In the last 16 months or so, we’ve been covering these issues — and more — and I believe that we’ve become a trusted source of accurate local news for Skaneateles residents, as well as those in surrounding towns who frequently travel to Skaneateles or work there.
Trusted source. I think all of us who read the Journal would find it easy to agree with Linda on that. Not to mention how great it is to have the local paper in general.
Linda also told SkaneatelesTalk that the Journal is committed to continuing existing news coverage, but they also hope “to do more in-depth stories as time and staff permit.” Concerning the benefits of the new, local office, and Linda’s schedule, Linda told SkaneatelesTalk:
Our new local office gives us a presence in the village, and therefore will allow us to have even more interaction with residents and the issues that affect and concern them. While I must still be in Auburn Mondays and Tuesdays for proofing and printing that week’s paper, I plan to spend as much time as possible in my office in Skaneateles.
So, here’s one enthusiastic welcome to Linda and the Skaneateles Journal to their new, village office location! You might consider stopping by the Newspaper Nook to say hi to Linda during your travels, filling her in on all of your likes and gripes in and around Skinny proper!
Also, if you aren’t already visiting them on the web, check out the Skaneateles Journal website here, and be sure to comment on the articles!
