From humble beginnings at Bowdish and Company, Skaneateles has a long and interesting history in sailboat design and production. One such sailboat is the Lightning class, a 19 foot trailerable centerboard sloop, one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world. Ted Turner, Dennis Conner, Ken Read, Dave Dellenbaugh, Dave Curtis, Bruce Goldsmith, Tom Allen, Neal Fowler, Steve Benjamin, Ched Proctor, Bill Shore, Greg Fisher, and Andy Horton are just a few notable individuals who have competed in the Lightning.
Read about the Skaneateles history of the Barnes brothers and the Lightning class sailboat here and here at the International Lightning Class Association website. And here is another article relating to Olin Stephens, the original designer of the Lightning class sailboat from Auburn.
