More than 2000 people signed up for the Relay for Life event that took place last night and into this morning at the S.U. Carrier Dome. There were a lot of S.U. and ESF students but there were also families with young children and our own team of Skaneateles High School Girls. At last tally the entire event pulled in a fundraising total for the American Cancer Society of over $130K, and $785 of that was due to our girls (more…)

The snow is here for a brief time but so is the Maple Syrup. During the warm days and the cold nights the sap flows quickly through tubing which is strung from maple tree to maple tree. This means that those farming the syrup are up late into the night boiling sap and turning the sap into syrup.
Today and tomorrow we will be taking ourselves and our children/grandchildren to Cedarvale Maple Syrup farm on Pleasant Valley Road. Just take 175 past Skanellus, go about 6 miles and take a right onto Pleasant Valley Road ( across from the gas station/convenience store). To add interest to your trip, look for the “disappearing lake” on your right. After you pass the lake (It looks like a very shallow lake and looks a little like a deep swamp but it disappears and returns and is a mystery to those who study it.) Enjoy the views of the valley for about 5 miles, pass Kasson Road hill on your left, go around a bend and you arrive at Cedarvale Maple Syrup. The direction link is below.

Relay for Life in the Carrier Dome is tonight. It begins at 7PM and goes through the night until 7AM Sunday morning. It is mainly a Syracuse University and ESF relay but this year 2 Moms and 10 Skaneateles Sophomore High School Girls will also have a team there.
The girls are really excited and preparing for the event today. We will be taking lots of pictures and posting an article after the event so check back…
The girls have raised almost $800 - AWESOME JOB girls!!! They will continue to raise money onsite with fundraising efforts that take place all through the event. This particular event has raised over $100,000 so far and continues to grow. It is now currently the 7th ranking Relay for Life event for raising money for the American Cancer Society. If you would like to donate to our team, follow this link to our team’s page with Relay for Life HERE.

In the past couple of weeks Spring has sprung in Skaneateles, NY. I’ve seen the migrating birds returning to our area - Geese, Robin’s, Red-winged Blackbird. I just noticedyesterday a clump of snowdrop flowers were beginning to poke their heads out of the frozen earth. We have had rain coming down sporadically for about a week and it was washing away some of the leftover Winter dirt.
Now this morning we are back to checking on school cancellations (Marcellus was delayed but not us - wimps and shovelling. The temps aren’t bad so I don’t suspect our recent overnight snow dump will last, but none the less it is here.

Syracuse, NY - A teacher from Skaneateles plead guilty in Onondaga County Court today to engaging in an illegal relationship with an underaged girl.
William Milham pleaded guilty before Onondaga County Judge Joseph Fahey to a felony charge of third-degree criminal sex act in connection with the October 2002 incident.
Fahey promised Milham a sentence of no worse than shock probation, which would include 10 years probation and six months in jail. Sentencing is scheduled for May 22.
Defense lawyer Emil Rossi said Milham is giving up his teaching career as a result of today’s guilty plea.
In September, state police charged Milham, a Skaneateles High School social studies teacher, with having sexual contact with a student at the school back in 2002. The girl was younger than 17 at the time, troopers said.
Staff writer Jim O’Hara called in this report by cell phone from the courthouse.

What makes a girls’ night different from other nights? Maximum girlieness. How you define that depends on how your group likes to bond.
One teriffic idea is the Main House at The Skaneateles Suites; sleeps up to eight Girls in four Bedrooms. Smaller number of Girls? Try a Bungalow.

There is a very cool website out there that has actually databased dances across the country - first by state and then they are broken down by town/city. Here is the direct link to the NY State dances. If you look down the list a little you will see Skaneateles is in the list for our Cabin Fever Dance. Here is the link if you are interested in attending dance events other than just the one held here in Skaneateles, NY.

If you decide to attend this Friday’s Cabin Fever Dance at the Presbyterian Church from 8PM - 11PM you should look for these guys when you get there.
Rick Manning will be the fiddler for the event

Bob Nicholson will be the caller

The Creamery, a vital part of late 19thβ:early 20th century agriculture and commerce, centralized milk processing. In the early 1990s the Skaneateles Historical Society restored this important period structure as a local museum with space for artifacts, historical research, records and archives. The building to the right served as the boiler plant for the Creamery. Auxiliary buildings were located between the two.
The Present β
Today the Creamery is one of Skaneateles’s primary culural centers, housing a growing local history museum, busy community room and facilities for research, care of records and archives, as well as the site of monthly programs of local historic interest, The boiler plant became a residence with an added garage. The buildings between the Creamery and the boiler plant were demolished.
The Future β
The new museum expansion will incorporate the former boiler plant to feature the Boat/Transportation Museum. The two buildings will be connected by a wing adjacent to Skaneateles Creek. A small addition will be built at the northeast corner of the Creamery. These much needed additional spaces will enhance community research and records areas, and an income-generating museum shop to help support the facility.
