News & Notes
Carrolls’ barn restoration evolves into community event
Tim Carroll and his wife Heather never realized how their barn would come to define them.
Tim and his wife met in Boston and decided to move back to the area shortly before their wedding. They were looking for a place for their wedding and settled on Hobbit Hollow Farms Bed and Breakfast.
At the last minute, they decided to buy a house instead. They purchased an old farmhouse with a huge barn on Lacy Road across from James Greenfield’s farm. The big barn required some renovations, so Tim and Heather enlisted the help of family and friends to stabilize the big barn.
The day they returned from their honeymoon was 9-11. Inspired by that tragedy, Tim and Heather decided they needed to get to know their community. They invited everyone they could find within a three-mile radius to the first ever Mandana Block Party to be held in their newly restored barn. Dozens of people showed up and the event has grown every year since.
The following year, Tim and Heather attended the Sundance Film Festival and felt they could host a film festival of their own, albeit on a much different scale. They purchased used theater seats from the Strand Theater in Old Forge, built a stage and purchased a projector. Every spring since, the Carrolls have hosted the Mandana Film Festival featuring films from their collection.
The barn has also played host to the Class of 1987’s 20th reunion and to a group of German dignitaries visiting the region.
EarlyActers learn more about water filtration projects
The Skaneateles EarlyActers learned more about water filtration systems last Thursday as they ponder how to spend the money they worked so hard to raise at Winterfest.
I provided them with information about Pure Water for the World, a Vermont organization that installs slow-sand filtration systems in Honduras and Haiti, primarily. The company has said that a $500 donation will pay for a filtration system to be installed in a school classroom on an island off the southern coast of Haiti that serves up to 100 kids per day and is also available to the community when school is not in session.
District Foundation Chair Jack Luchsinger followed with a presentation about the water component of the district’s current Haiti project. The systems cost $22, are simple to use and are sufficient to serve one family with clean water.
Finally, Gard Lorey provided the kids with his slide presentation (which is now set to music) about his trips to El Salvador. Dr. Lorey engaged the kids in a discussion about the importance of fluoride as I struggled with the audio-visual equipment. He explained that they provide fluoride tablets to the schools, which administer them to the students. The cost to provide fluoride tablets to a student for a full year is about $2, he said.
The kids will be making their decision soon and are scheduled to present to our group on April 24.
