Toastmasters’ four-step formula for introducing speakers
Joe Cole showed us a thing or two about introducing speakers last Thursday.
Joe, a long-time member of Toastmasters International, offered a four-step formula for introducing speakers. The goal is to make both the speaker and the audience comfortable as you transfer control from yourself to the new speaker. It is imperative, of course, that you have information about the speaker so you don’t end up introducing them by the wrong name, as Joe did in introducing Ward as Wade many years ago!
It is crucial that the group provide applause for the speaker to make it easier for the speaker so he or she knows they have your undivided attention. He also counseled us that the place where the speaker stands is the lecturn, not the podium.
Joe’s four-step formula, as best as I was able to jot it down, is as follows:
1. Ho Hum Crasher. This is where you recite the individual’s credentials to make it clear that the speaker is a high up mucky-muck
2. Wake Up. To grab attention. Example: He might look a little leery because if he doesn’t do a good job he knows we’re going to throw him in the lake.”
3. Why Here. Explain that speaker was invited by us, asked to come, etc.
4. So What. What he is going to talk about.
Joe also advised that it is key to shake the speaker’s hand before they speak. This signals the transfer of control.
To conclude, Joe provided us of an example of his formula by introducing our second speaker of the day, Dave Penfield, who discussed the 70th annual Lightning Regatta coming up this summer.
Lightning Regatta seeks volunteers for summer Regatta
The organizers of the 70th annual Lightning Regatta are looking for a little help this summer.
Dave Penfield, assistant chairman for grounds for the upcoming event and commodore for the 60th anniversary visited our club to update us on the event. The Lightning is the most successful one-design class sailboat and is very popular internationally with about 15,400 boats built worldwide and about 500 active fleets. The Lightning was designed in the 1930s as an affordable family day sailor and racing boat.
The chairman for the event is John Henry, Jr., commodore at the Skaneateles Country Club.
Organizers are looking for support from volunteers, including directing traffic shore-side, driving passenger vans, providing ATVs, providing water and/or snacks and, for those with a boat, spending a few hours on the water providing assistance where necessary.
