-Going green has been a hot trend over the past few years and in conjunction with this revelation, the flower of all things organic has blossomed as well. Niles Gourmet Country Market & Bistro Cucina Rustica, 4588 Grange Hall Road, Niles, provides its customers with the taste and experience of organic cooking within a scenic country setting.
The bistro provides all natural and organic specialty foods from free range local meats to the vegetables directly taken from the garden of the three-acre piece of land surrounding the log cabin location. All meals are handmade from scratch and recipes are “made up as I go along,” says Sandie Becker, who owns and runs Niles Gourmet with her husband Eric. Sandie Becker prides herself on using foods that contain no pesticides, hormones or additives.
Originally from Ithaca—where organic is all the rage, Becker notes—the pair has always been very familiar with natural products and has been cooking organically for 20 years. In addition to the restaurant, there is an organic grocery store attached with local and international products available for purchase.
“I only stock organic products and will explain the health benefits of them to teach people how to eat right,” Becker continues. The store is stocked with produce from countries across the Atlantic such as Italy and France. Tasty options include organic chocolates, olive oil, Italian tomatoes, sauces, breads, and a variety of cheeses.(more…)

–Blood inventory is at a less than three-day supply level, according to the American Red Cross. Today, Assemblyman Will Barclay urged eligible people to donate blood to help save lives.
“The summer months are typically difficult for the Red Cross as donations tend to dip. However, the need still remains critical and strong,” said Barclay.
Certain blood types are at lower levels than others. Below are some of the locations where people can donate blood throughout the next month.

SKANEATELES - Between the lake, the vibrant downtown, and the busy streetside businesses, pedestrians are drawn to Skaneateles streets during the summer. To encourage a safer walking environment, the Skaneateles Police Department is trying a tactic to make motorists more aware of the laws stating they have to yield to walkers in marked pedestrian crossings. As part of the ongoing effort, the department has plainclothes officers using the crosswalks while marked patrols observe and pull over any violators. Officers first did the enforcement effort on Tuesday and issued 12 tickets, primarily for the crosswalk violations. Skaneateles Police Chief Lloyd Perkins initiated the effort in response to resident complaints and several near misses. This detail is similar to an enforcement effort the Chicago Police Department uses. In addition to the enforcement details, regular patrol units will watch for any violations in crosswalks. Hello all, this is Chris Briel. I recently noticed that our blog’s Business Directory page was not working, and I’m not sure how long it was like that. I have been busy with a new project over the last month or so and usually only work on SkaneatelesTalk 1 time a week. Please if anyone notices something that isn’t working properly, don’t hesitate to shoot me an e-mail. It won’t be looked at as annoying, exactly the opposite
Thanks and the Business Directory is currently working.

- When we were kids we celebrated the Fourth of July in the back yard of my grandmother’s bungalow in Carmel. It was a simple affair, casually done around a a pile of stones that served as a fireplace and an old 1935 Ford that died after a trip down from my Aunt Lucy’s who lived in Cocksakie. The black Ford sat there, gathering moss, mold and a hefty collection of spider webs and their ominous architects. My mother had set rows of potted geraniums as guards along each running boards in order to dissuade her curious children from trying to enter the derelict vehicle. How can I say this?OK…You would never find a picture of this yard in any country magazine.I am not saying that back yard was less than chic, but it had a certain Appalachian joie de vivre and we loved it.My mother was less enthusiastic.
We would toast marshmallows, drink home made root beer and watch my father put on a fireworks display with background “music” provided by my mother who was sure that someone was going to lose a body part. Each year we heard stories of someone we knew or someone that she had read about in the Daily News who was disfigured by fireworks, and, if they were lucky, facing life with only one of something that ordinarily came in pairs.I don’t think anyone ever mentioned Thomas Jefferson, although they should have.
This year, after years of not doing too much and thinking about what the anniversary of our country’s Independence means, we will find something more appropriate to do.Given things as they are, this is the year to celebrate some of the good things that we have…like each other, friends and family, a stable internet connection, enough gas to get out to camp and back, etc. (more…)
