Creekside Books & Coffee, an independent bookstore and coffeehouse in Skaneateles, is pleased to host an offsite event Saturday July 26, 2008 at 1 PM at The Sherwood Inn, Skaneateles featuring Kirk W. House and Charles R. Mitchell authors of Finger Lakes and Watkins Glen Racing.  Racing is celebrating 60 years in Watkins Glen.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Kirk W. House, of Bath, is the former director-curator of the Glenn Curtiss Museum, is a member of the Schuyler County Historical Society and other historical groups.  Charles R. Mitchell, of Keuka Park, and formerly a professional photographer is curator of the Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society / Oliver House Museum.
Between them, they have written a dozen Arcadia Publishing books. Vintage images come from the archives of the county historical societies in Yates and Ontario Counties, the Curtiss Museum, the Steuben County historian’s office, private owners, and the authors’ personal collections.

Finger Lakes: For more than a century, the natural scenic beauty of the Finger Lakes has drawn generations of tourists. The vineyards, glens, and steamers that made the region famous are displayed through the vintage images in this volume. These postcards capture the lively and dynamic atmosphere that has kept visitors flocking to the area for years, eager to mail a piece of their memories back home.

Watkins Glen Racing: Long ago, visitors reached Watkins Glen by railroad, steamboat, and horse-drawn wagon. They came to stay in the grand resorts, watch automobile racing in the streets, stroll through the countryside, attend Grange fairs, and ride an early trolley. Today the grand resorts are gone, but millions still come seeking spectacular gorges, the inland sea of Seneca Lake, vast vineyards, fine wineries, and Grand Prix racing.

“There’s good reasons for me to house a Local Authors / Region Section in the bookstore,” says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books and Coffee.  “We have a rich history here in Central New York.  Thankfully we also have dedicated people like Kirk House and Charles Mitchell who have taken the time to document what so many of us want and need to know about our region.”

Creekside Books & Coffee is located at 35 Fennell Street in Skaneateles.  The bookstore is the only retail store in the village selling new hardcover and paperback books as well as toys, gifts, greeting cards and other merchandise. The coffeehouse features the freshest roasted coffee in town, a light fare menu and a pleasant atmosphere to relax and enjoy.
