News & Notes

Ward returns to South Africa for Literacy

More than three years after helping to create an basic literacy program for women there, Ward Vuillemot returned to South Africa earlier this year to experience the results first-hand.  Ward reports being amazed at the success of the program in just three short years.

The literacy project provides for teacher training and education materials for adult literacy and numeracy program in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa serving the rural regions known as KwasNibela, about 200 miles north of Durban.

The program focuses primarily on women because they are typically the lowest members of society.  Without education, a typical women will have 12 to 13 children between the age of 12 and their late 20s, when many die due to complications, Ward said.  With proper education, women learn basic health issues and typically have six children with fewer health problems reported, if any.

As a result of the program’s efforts, 98 individuals have been employed, and each will teach on average 20 others basic literacy and numeracy skills.  Two individuals went from being illiterate to earning Bachelor’s degrees.

In addition to women, the program has trained prisoners and staff to teach literacy to fellow prisoners so that they will be productive members of society upon their eventual release.

The total cost of the project was estimated to be $22,800, of which $8,700 was supplied by The Rotary Foundation, with remaining amount coming from the participating districts, including our club.  The 19 participating District 7150 clubs and the D7150 Literacy committee supplied $3,500 of the total costs with the remaining amount coming from other districts and clubs in the USA, Canada & South Africa.

In addition to the District 7150 clubs, Literacy Committee and individual Rotarians, the project is shared by; The Seattle-International Club (Seattle Wa.) , West-Ottawa Club (Ottawa, Canada), Pitermaritzburg Club (South Africa) and District 7040 (USA & Canada). The clubs in our District 7150 that contributed to the project are: Auburn, Aurora, Baldwinsville, Camden, Camillus, Canastota, Cato, Chittenango, DeWitt, Fayetteville-Manlius, Fulton-Sunrise, Moravia, Oneida Shores, Oriskany Falls, Oswego, Sauquoit, Skaneateles, Skaneateles-Sunrise, Tully & Utica.
