News & Notes

DG Calabrese: Let’s walk the talk to Make Dreams Real in 2008-09

District Governor Larry Calabrese called on our club Thursday August 14 to help him Make Dreams Real for children both locally and throughout the world.

DG Calabrese explained this year’s theme to the club and discussed how as a District we plan as Rotarians to follow through with that theme.

More than 30,000 children die each day from preventable diseases, primarily due to the lack of clean drinking water, poverty and starvation, he said.  In addition, millions throughout the world cannot read.

DG Calabrese said the district has called on County Health Departments to identify the primary health problems facing children in our communities so we can share that information and provide avenues service where necessary.

DG Calabrese also called on our club to join the District in its mission to meet Rotary International’s challenge of raising $1,000.00 per club per year over the next three years to wipe out Polio.  The District has announced a Pennies for Polio campaign to be coordinated through local schools.  The District is also considering organizing a Walk for Polio or similar event.

Our District Governor also discussed public relations and membership.  He is challenging clubs to increase membership by 10 percent, or two new members for our club.

To increase awareness of our clubs, DG Calabrese announced that the district newsletter, the Credo  is accepting submissions from local clubs.  Every club is encouraged to submit write-ups of its events.  The deadline is the 10th of the month.

DG Calabrese’s wife Annabelle joined him for breakfast with our club.  Her goal is to increase participation among spouses of Rotarians this year.  She also announced a service project for spouses to be completed at the District Conference in September.  The project will put together literacy kits to be distributed to parents of newborn babies who give birth at St. Luke’s hospital in Utica.  The goal is to make 300 of these kits at the conference for distribution.
