Claire Affleck Training – it’s been almost a year

September 27, 2008  |  No Comments  |  351 views

Contributed by Claire Affleck / Claire Affleck Training

Claire Affleck Training is approaching its one year anniversary of Claire purchasing it last September 20th.
It has been a busy and exciting year to say the least! Besides a full work load of daily chores, riding, giving lessons, and competing in horse shows, Claire and her team of dedicated friends, family, and volunteers have made tremendous improvements and changes to the facility.

All new fencing has been put in the pastures, as well as the outdoor ring, there have been some landscaping changes with the addition of more trees and flowers, both the main horse barn and the hay barn have fresh coats of paint, stalls and stall bars have been stained and painted … oh the list is virtually endless! The most recent improvement has been the expansion to the tack room. The old one was cramped, incongruent, and not overly inviting to guests and customers. Take a look at the new tack room’s photo gallery below! We hope the new version is much more appealing to everyone. The most ingenious idea was the bench that serves for both seating and storage for people’s tack boxes. Our favorite creative aspect of it is the cedar tree that serves as the coat rack!

Everyone at Claire Affleck Training would like to extend an open invitation to you to stop by to see the changes that have been made, meet the horses, and say hello to us!

Magic and Calm

Overnight rain turning to drizzle
feeling like velvet on my skin.
Fog shrouding me everywhere
with trees and tennis courts sketched,
and the church steeple
is completely hidden from sight.

No wind, not even a gentle breeze.
Seagulls rest quietly on
grassy athletic field
until together they take off into the air,
making flapping and swishing sounds
of silk rubbing against me.

Fog doesn’t lift and stillness disappears.
Runners, walkers, dogs en galore.
Cars driving by, steered by people
rushing to work.
But I feel magic and calm
for hours to come!

Video: John McCain to tax health care premiums as income

September 25, 2008  |  1 Comment  |  424 views

When I first moved to Skaneateles, I talked for a while to the lawyer for the seller of our house in the front yard, mainly about the Skaneateles area, and I remember that he joked with me that he was the sole Democrat in Skaneateles to show up for Democratic primaries. At the time, I just laughed, and said “I’ll bet!”  That was almost 20 years ago.  Interestingly, John McCain has set forth a health plan that may effectively tax health benefits for some workers, primarily those with high incomes and/or expensive health plans.  This would seem to apply to many people in Skaneateles, hitting them right in the pocket book, right at a time when expenses are soaring for fuel, food, and many other necessities.  Here’s a video of Joe Biden discussing McCain’s plans to treat certain health insurance premiums as taxable income if he’s elected, possibly making the plan the largest tax increase on middle-class tax payers in American history. You can read more about it in this New York Times article.  The article also describes how John McCain has advocated the “free market approach” (read: deregulation) as the approach to make health insurance more affordable.

Barack Obama is such a welcome change from the nonsensical babbling that has emanated from the Executive for the last eight years, and continues to be blurted out by Obama’s opponent.

Helping keep Skaneateles clean

My name is Rob Dougherty and I  have been in the trash and recycling business for 8 years. In this time I have seen many companies fold or swallowed up by larger companies. We have a company in the area that has recently moved it’s base of operations out of the area and to accommodate for the costs has raised prices, but decreased the services offered.

I have started a new residential  company in the Skaneateles area named ”Trash Butler” . At these times when fuel costs keep rising and personal time is at a premium, service industries need to maintain high standards of conduct. Providing for the needs of their patrons with quality service at reasonable rates.  Rates as low as $25 a month.

No large trucks to damage driveways or roadways. No hydraulic lines (lifts, packers etc…) that are known to leak, that may damage driveways or even the lake if leaked in the wrong spot.

Back to old time values. Service for and about the customer.
