“With four items on the agenda for feedback purposes, the community was asked how they felt about assessments and taxes.
“Everybody’s happy with the taxes,” Tierney said when no one spoke, and he received a group-wide “no” as a response.
According to Tierney, the town has hired a new assessor, Ron Miller, whereas the assessor was previously an elected position. Some residents may have met with Miller, and, depending on the situation, have had a good or bad experience, Tierney said.”

Squire Farms Garden Center gets a new website

May 30, 2009  |  No Comments  |  235 views

Squire Farms Garden Center and Landscaping
I love promoting local companies and recently received an email from fellow website developers, Lonnie and David Chu. They just launched a new website for Squire Farms and wanted to spread the word about the lovely garden center in Elbridge, NY.

Squire Farms Landscape Design and Installation offers 25 varieties of ornamental grasses and hostas as well as a huge selection of trees, shrubs and flowering plants. The owner is a fabulous landscape designer and grower of plants who has never used a computer. Squire Farms is doing business the old-fashioned way… with a little help from others so they can reach out and include the tech generation as well. They have a beautiful Cobblestone barn they operate out of and before you go stop by to see them, be sure to visit their website for a 10% coupon you can print off.

Their website states “We’re old-fashioned. Would rather spend the day outside tending to the growing things than inside sitting in front of a computer screen. So you’ll find us the old fashioned ways.”

Ms. Capucilli will read from her newest Biscuit and Katy Duck books and will autograph her books after the presentation.

“It would be hard to find a child who didn’t know and love the Biscuit books.  Children will also enjoy being introduced to Alyssa’s newest character, Katy Duck!  This is Alyssa’s second visit to Creekside and we hope many will come out to welcome her back to Skaneateles.  She is wonderful with the children and really enjoys meeting her young fans,” says Erika Davis of Creekside Books.  “This is sure to be a memorable event for the whole family.”

About the Author

Alyssa Satin Capucilli is the award winning author of over fifty books including Biscuit, the popular
bestseller used to launch the My First I Can Read series from HarperCollins Publishers.  The author notes, “When I was a young girl growing up in Brooklyn, New York, the weekly trip to the public library with my mother and sisters was much anticipated. I loved the quiet hush of the room, the books on the shelves, the books in my hands. I quickly became an avid reader and loved to imagine myself as different characters in books. I’m certain that my love of reading has inspired my love of writing.”

SPECIAL EVENTS & AUTHORS VISITS

Thursday, May 21st
Local author, Anthony Gero to introduce his new book, Black Soldiers of New York State.
Anthony Gero, author of the new SUNY Press book Black Soldiers of New York State: A Proud Legacy, will speak about his work and sign copies of the book at Creekside. Gero, a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians, worked for more than ten years on the research for the book, trying to answer the basic question of why these African-Americans would serve a country that denied them the full rights of citizenship. “It is essentially a book about dreams,” said Gero. He also includes this quote from Martin Luther King Jr. in the book, which provides further insight: “If a man hasn’t discovered something he would die for, he isn’t fit to live.”

“A year ago, Marla and Marty Connelly, of Auburn, were among the hundreds of people that attended the 12th annual Finger Lakes SPCA Pet Walk.
Marla said they had come for several years for one reason – their love of animals.

“I love dogs,” Marla said. “I can’t take them all home with me and take care of them all, but this is something I can do to help them.”

Last year, the Connellys were in the unique position of being the Pet Walk’s top fundraisers.”

“The mock DWI took place Wednesday May 6 in the parking lot at the Austin Park Pavilion on Jordan Street and the accident scene looked extremely real — something the students noticed right away.
“It was kind of scary. They made it seem exactly like it would be if it happened right then and right there,” said student Amrita Deol.
As rescue teams took immediate action, the students watched, some with tears in their eyes as their classmates struggled to get out of the SUV — or didn’t, as was the case with victim Amy Greenfield who lost her life in the mock-up.”
