“Habitat for Humanity volunteers are helping to keep the wood from an old barn in Skaneateles out of local landfills.

“We took this metal roof off this morning. We’re removing the nails off of these boards and I think they want to take the tar off this roof so that they can get to the wood underneath,” said Richard Kendrick, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer.”

“The Tri-County Skaneateles Lake Milfoil Project is well underway trying to rid the pristine lake of the last 10 or so acres of the invasive species.
Under the auspices of the Tri-County Skaneateles Lake Association, divers hit the water for the first time this year on May 18 and once again began pulling the weeds that plant themselves in the bottom of the lake. Divers swim to the bottom of the lake and pull the plants, then send them up to the surface and the boat through a suction device.”

“Who isn’t cutting back these days? A study by Pew Research Institute found that 8 out of 10 Americans are trimming expenses, regardless of income or whether they have actually lost a job.

They are shopping more at discount stores, cutting back on cigarettes and alcohol and trimming their spending for cable or satelllite TV, according to the study.

But some things are seemingly recession-proof, according to the study. Despite the economy, people see high-speed Internet access, a cell phone and a home computer as vital.”

The Adirondack region of New York State is, in many respects, America’s cauldron of conservation. Editors William F. Porter, Jon D. Erickson and Ross S. Whaley, along with leading scholars, activists and practitioners – those who know the Park’s origin and realities of living in a protected area – narrate this history.  Co-editor, William F. Porter, professor of wildlife ecology and director of the Adirondack Ecological Center at SUNY ESF, will be at Creekside Books & Coffee on Thursday, July 23rd at 7:00 pm to introduce and speak about “The Great Experiment in Conservation”, published by Syracuse University Press.

Jack Reed, Skaneateles resident and long-time cross country and track coach, will talk about his book, “Back to the Front” at Creekside Books & Coffee on Thursday, July 16th beginning at 7:00 PM.

The story centers on the 2006 Girl’s Cross Country Team and reveals intimate and stark, jaw-dropping details that leaves nothing out, including incidents involving alcohol that jeopardized the girl’s 14-year unbeaten streak and the imprisonment of a teammate for killing a childhood friend. The story of a high school superstar, national champion and Athens Olympian Jonathon Riley trying to break the 4-minute mile is told for the first time. This coming-of-age tale about Skaneateles student-athletes is raw, and as Phil Blackwell, the Sports Editor of the Eagle Newspapers, says, “By the time 402 pages are done and the races have all been run, your emotions are spent.”

Features “Made in New York” wines, cheeses and specialty appetizers.

Creekside Coffeehouse offers another way to “indulge, enjoy and linger” this summer with a new Wine & Appetizer Menu featuring “Made in New York” wines, cheeses and specialty appetizers. Open from noon until closing every day of the week, Creekside’s Wine & Appetizer Menu features fine wines from popular Anyela’s Vineyards on Skaneateles Lake and Cayuga Lake’s Swedish Hill Vineyard’s gold medal winning Semi-Dry Riesling. Sonama Vineyard’s “kiss of fruit” Merlot, a diva red Pinot Noir from Sonoma’s Russian River Valley and Rex Goliath’s hearty Cabernet are the selected wines from sunny California. Italy’s vibrant Campanile Pinot Grigio and Argentina’s flavorful Chardonnay from Alamos, round out the summer wine list.

Selected to pair with these fine wines is a “Made in New York” Cheese Plate with an all-natural cheese assortment from Murano Cheese in Waterloo and River Rat Cheese from the Thousand Islands (grapes and an assortment of crackers and nuts accompany this plate).
