Skaneateles is considering the use of a $500 wheel “boot” device to deal with people who don’t pay their parking fines. According to Trustee Kathryn Carlson, discussions regarding parking fines began when the board was talking about parking fees for construction. Over the past three years the village has averaged a 40 percent return on parking tickets. How do you feel about the possible use of the wheel boot?

With the number of officers on the force, it would probably be less costly, more effective and personal for an officer on duty to make a visit to a residents’ home with a friendly reminder of their overdue tickets. For those who are not residents a letter would have the same effect. I find it hard to believe we need both police vehicles, with both officers to write a ticket for a speeding grandmother in a minivan. Also, $500.00 would go a long way for public relations classes for some of Skaneateles’ finest.
a boot? really? is this really going to be that kind of town? no, we don’t need a boot. while i’ve never had a parking ticket and don’t know if this option is available, a pay-by-card option would make the tickets more likely to be paid.
only place i’ve ever received a parking ticket was in orlando, ironically while paying an expired tag ticket. what luck! anyway, they had just instituted a pay-by-card option, and it ended up being $5 cheaper. think i payed it over the phone while applying my new registration sticker to my tag.
I remember when parking was a dime and the parking meter lady put one in the meter for you and left a nice note and an envelope so you could contribute to other people who were shopping or using the library and having lunch in Skaneateles.
That’s when we were the “stress-free zone.”
There is simply no need for booting cars and other extraordinary measures to collect parking fines. It’s counterproductive.
I remember those days too Kate.
It’s a shame to go in the direction they are proposing, I hope it doesn’t happen.
