This may be a well known fact to many Skaneatelians, but it was news to me. It came to my attention recently that there was a passenger on the RMS Titanic bound for Skaneateles. For readers that may not be familiar with the Titanic tragedy, this was the British ocean liner that sank on her maiden voyage in 1912 after striking an iceberg, causing the death of 1,517 people. Emily Louisa Badman however was not one of those lost. Emily traveled third class on Titanic, bound for Skaneateles where her sister Pauline was living. Emily survived the sinking of the ship, and later reported that a passenger named Edward Dorking had helped her put on her lifebelt. She also stated that she had witnessed the notorious shootings on the ship’s deck, and had also heard the band play “Nearer My God to Thee.” Those who have seen the Hollywood production of this terrible event will remember the portrayals of these things from the film. Read more here about Emily from the Encyclopedia Titanica. Emily can be found listed here as a survivor in the List of passengers onboard RMS Titanic. And here is another article that talks in general about members of the Badman family in Skaneateles according to the 1850 Census. So even back in that early day we find people traveling from great distances to visit Skaneateles, no doubt then being as desirable a place to visit or take up residence as it remains today.
