John Packwood was a highly successful carriage maker in Skaneateles and one of the early owners of the Sherwood Inn – which he had renamed Packwood House in the late 1800’s. It is a contemporary lakeside retreat which offers 19 comfortable guest suites, many of which provide picturesque views of the lake and the village.

Packwood House joins many of our local merchants in Skaneateles, NY in supporting local artists during the monthly First Friday events. Packwood House will feature a different artist each month from 6PM to 9PM on First Friday. You can view the artists work in the lobby.

Charcoal and Pencil

When I was five years old I crossed the Atlantic Ocean for a summer in Europe. On the ship was a passenger who spent most of his time sketching. I saw him there every day and marveled at what he was creating. Far as I was concerned, his pencil was magic; he created the most beautiful pictures I had ever seen. I didn’t realize it then but I was changed forever. I‘ve been trying to find that magic pencil ever since.

I’m a devoted flyfisherman and spend much of my time on trout rivers, and the Atlantic salmon rivers of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec. Land and waterscapes are church to me so it’s natural for me to depict them.

News & Notes

DG Calabrese: Let’s walk the talk to Make Dreams Real in 2008-09

District Governor Larry Calabrese called on our club Thursday August 14 to help him Make Dreams Real for children both locally and throughout the world.

DG Calabrese explained this year’s theme to the club and discussed how as a District we plan as Rotarians to follow through with that theme.

More than 30,000 children die each day from preventable diseases, primarily due to the lack of clean drinking water, poverty and starvation, he said. In addition, millions throughout the world cannot read.

DG Calabrese said the district has called on County Health Departments to identify the primary health problems facing children in our communities so we can share that information and provide avenues service where necessary.

DG Calabrese also called on our club to join the District in its mission to meet Rotary International’s challenge of raising $1,000.00 per club per year over the next three years to wipe out Polio. The District has announced a Pennies for Polio campaign to be coordinated through local schools. The District is also considering organizing a Walk for Polio or similar event.

Our District Governor also discussed public relations and membership. He is challenging clubs to increase membership by 10 percent, or two new members for our club.

To increase awareness of our clubs, DG Calabrese announced that the district newsletter, the Credo is accepting submissions from local clubs. Every club is encouraged to submit write-ups of its events. The deadline is the 10th of the month.

DG Calabrese’s wife Annabelle joined him for breakfast with our club. Her goal is to increase participation among spouses of Rotarians this year. She also announced a service project for spouses to be completed at the District Conference in September. The project will put together literacy kits to be distributed to parents of newborn babies who give birth at St. Luke’s hospital in Utica. The goal is to make 300 of these kits at the conference for distribution.

Cary Briel and Curtis Feldmann have been working closely together over the past few months on everything from photos, to property management concepts, to Google maps and now Skaneateles Suites has launched a brand new “LOOK” for their website. Take a look at their new website by either clicking on the picture above or clicking on this link. Now you can get a very cohesive feel for their “Collection of places to stay in Skaneateles” right on the home page. Also, not to be missed is the Skaneateles Suites blog which is a champion among blogs for the local FingerLakes region. They work hard to get just about any and every local event added to their blog. A very useful tool for visitors coming to the area as well as locals looking for something to do on the weekend.

Great job Curt and Cary!

Drug trade group’s US$100,000 gift benefits Rotary’s challenge

To help support Rotary’s top goal of eradicating polio worldwide, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, known as PhRMA, has donated US$100,000 to The Rotary Foundation. The gift will help meet Rotary’s US$100 Million Challenge.

PhRMA is an industry trade group that represents the leading pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies in the United States, including sanofi-aventis and Novartis, two of the primary distributors of the oral polio vaccine.

“Our relationship with Rotary is very much part of our efforts to advance innovative and responsible approaches to providing access to sustainable health care,” said Chris Ward, PhRMA’s deputy vice president for international alliance development. “Our industry is driven by the search for cures and a genuine desire to improve health outcomes all over the world.”

When looking at the advancement of this goal, there is no better example than Rotary’s work in ridding the world of polio, said Ward.

Early in the summer I rode my bike with my daughter out to Borodino Market (our first trip to see the family farm for this season) and blogged on here about our great purchase of blackberry jam.

About a month later a nice lady from the local periodical FamilyTimes called me on the phone to inquire about my families habits of buying local, how important it was to us and how we emphasized it with our children (she came across the aforementioned blog post about the jam). She did a really nice write up on buying local in the August 2008 copy of Family Times in the article titled “Livin’ La Vida Local” - below is an excerpt of our conversation and the mention of our families favorite local treasure Borodino Market.

“… Skaneateles mother Christine Briel was initially driven to go local by the quality of produce grown around her home. “Freshness is the biggest thing,” says Briel, who has one child in college and one in high school, “but the connection with people who actually grew the stuff is really important, too.”

She doesn’t always find time in her busy schedule to stop at the weekly farmers’ market in her town. “If I miss the market, I will go to a local farm foods store like the Borodino Market,” Briel says. “Especially with our long winters, I find it really valuable to get fresh produce during the summer months.”

What they don’t buy from local farmers, the Briels grow in their back yard. This year, they will get radishes, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, beans and peas from their garden …”

This stunning American Sycamore sits next to Lafayette’s Quarters (Gideon Gilpin’s House), on what is now the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford, PA. It’s approximately 396 years old as of 2008, which means it witnessed the Revolutionary War battle that took place on its grounds, being well over 150 years old at the time. Legend says that the Marquis de Lafayette rested against this tree while his wounded leg was being tended to during the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. The diameter of this gigantic tree’s trunk is 9′ ! This quilt portrays just one branch.

My husband, parents and I visited this tree a few days after 9/11/01, on a gorgeous, breezy, late summer day with a deep blue, cloudless sky. It was quite moving to be standing on the grounds where a battle was fought for our nation’s independence during those intensely stressful days following 9/11. In this quilt, I tried to capture that sky, the breeze, the light, and the enormity of the tree.

State University of New York at Oswego Announces Exhibition of Contemporary Quilts Tyler Art Gallery will feature work of nineteen upstate artists September 5 through October 19. Tyler Art Gallery, on the SUNY Oswego campus, will display the work of nineteen upstate quilt artists in an upcoming exhibition entitled “A Personal Landscape: Contemporary Art Quilts.” The exhibition opens on September 5th and runs through October 19th.

“These are not traditional quilts in form or function,” said Dr. Laurene Buckley, director of Tyler Art Gallery, “but rather works of contemporary art composed of fabric, fiber, and unconventional materials. I think of them as quilts unleashed.” The exhibition will complement two other nature-themed exhibitions held concurrently at the Tyler Gallery: “Eco Tankers: An Exhibition by Bruce Conkle” and “Rocks and Rills: Nature Themes from the Permanent Collection”.

Guest Curator of the exhibition, Pat Pauly from Pittsford, NY, chose works by quilt artists from the upstate New York region around Oswego. “Each of these quilts reflects the artist’s interpretation of ‘landscape,’ either real or imagined,” Pauly said. Her own work “Earth, Water II” captures giant sized leaves and water lilies in the abstract quilt form.

Other artists featured in the show include Ithaca quilter Aafke Swart Steenhuis, who depicts the imagined inner landscape of the human body in her work “Giant Cell X”. “Buttermilk Falls” by Caren Betlinski, from Rushville, NY, depicts a countryside “painted” with thread and fabric, satisfying for those who are more comfortable with their feet on the ground. Wellsville artist Patricia Mattison interprets the outer limits of our natural world with “Perseid Meteor,” a fiber collage that captures the vibrance of a meteor shower on the darkened landscape.

The Interlaken artist Mary Diamond, in her piece “Quartet”, personifies the four seasons as four muses of nature’s cycle, each morphing between human and plant. Jeanne Raffer Beck’s work “A Passionate Heart’s Landscape,” is an abstract take on the landscape of human emotion. Marcia DeCamp uses remaining jet contrails as the focus of her work, “Jet Trails #5”, finding her subject matter above the horizon line.

Other artists include Linda Bachman, Janet Ozard Root, Judith Plotner, Nancy Davis Murty, Beth Brandkamp, Ren Vasiliev, Sally Dutko, Patricia G. Faulkner, Melissa Craven Fowler, Nancy P. Hicks, Holly Knott, and Jeanne Simpson.

The exhibition opens with a reception at the Tyler Art Gallery on Friday on September 5th from 5 to 7 p.m. The Gallery will be open weekdays 10-4 and weekends 12:30-4:30 through October 19th.

“Publicity begets Publicity” is one of the truest statements in public relations today. As soon as a woman entrepreneur and her company obtain publicity, the more publicity they continue to receive. Publicity is an inexpensive, creative way to gain awareness for a business and its owner. There are three essential components to get the ball rolling: a professional headshot, a template for a press release, and a list of valuable PR opportunities.

This unique opportunity will provide women entrepreneurs with a professional headshot session with Laure Lillie Photographie in her Skaneateles photo studio, a fifteen-minute PR consulting session and materials handout with Tracy Higginbotham, a hot beverage, snack and $10 book coupon from Creekside Books & Coffee.

To visit the Women TIES website and learn more information about this event, click www.womenties.com/events for reservations due by August 17th.
