Click to view larger versionPackwood House was built in 2003 on the site of the old Skaneateles Post Office, Packwood House was named after John Packwood (1824-1890). John Packwood was a highly successful carriage maker in Skaneateles and one of the early owners of the Sherwood Inn – which he had renamed Packwood House in the late 1800’s. It is a contemporary lakeside retreat which offers 19 comfortable guest suites, many of which provide picturesque views of the lake and the village.

Packwood House joins many of our local merchants in Skaneateles, NY in supporting local artists during the monthly First Friday events. Packwood House will feature a different artist each month from 6PM to 9PM on First Friday. You can view the artists work in the lobby.

This month Jurgen Karker’s work will be on display at Packwood House. Read Jurgen’s Bio below:

Jurgen Karker
Charcoal and Pencil

When I was five years old I crossed the Atlantic Ocean for a summer in Europe. On the ship was a passenger who spent most of his time sketching. I saw him there every day and marveled at what he was creating. Far as I was concerned, his pencil was magic; he created the most beautiful pictures I had ever seen. I didn’t realize it then but I was changed forever. I‘ve been trying to find that magic pencil ever since.

I’m a devoted flyfisherman and spend much of my time on trout rivers, and the Atlantic salmon rivers of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec. Land and waterscapes are church to me so it’s natural for me to depict them.

The scenes are simple, peaceful and hopefully draw viewers into them, with the wish that they could be there. Click on the thumbnail to the right to view a close-up of Jurgen’s work.

Dr. Robert Kiltz, SkaneatelesI am Italian, and thus half my family are Italian, and if you know Italians you will probably know that it is not our nature to be beacons of positivity 24-7. Not that I don’t try to keep a positive outlook on life — I do. But the pattern of my genetic code is constantly poking the cynic within me in the side, saying “you just gonna let that go.. and not say something?” “Just keep your cool,” I retort, almost saddened, as if I’m betraying my heritage. “Being negative never produces a good result :)” Right? Right. (more…)
