“Sailing across blue lakes, propelled only by the wind, may be the greenest water sport of all.
Central New York is a perfect spot to sail, with its plentiful winds
zipping across its myriad lakes and reservoirs.
And you don’t even need your own boat right away. The Skaneateles Sailing Club has a trial membership program that lets beginners take lessons and make use of the club’s boats for two years.
“This gives them a chance to kick the tires a little bit,” explained Griff Williams, operating manager of the club and a sailor for 32 years.”
The program lets would-be sailors decide if they really like the sport. In strong winds, the boat leans sharply to once side, or “heels,” and that can be a scary proposition to beginners.
“A lot of people get white-knuckled when the boat is heeling,” Williams said.”
