Author and Syracuse University Professor, Marvin Druger will read excerpts from his new book, The Misadventures of Marvin, at Creekside Books & Coffee on Thursday, May 27th at 7:00 pm.
“witty reminiscence from an unforgettable professor who made biology exciting and fun for 40,000 undergraduates over the years – a delightful read!” ~ Nancy Cantor, Chancellor and President of Syracuse University
Description
As Henry Ford said, life is a series of experiences. We learn from everything that we do, and everything that we do becomes part of what we are. In his fifty-five years of teaching biology and fifty-two years of marriage to Pat, a retired administrator for the Syracuse University writing program, Druger has shaped his experiences with his boundless energy, quick wit, and tireless sense of adventure. With humor and refreshing candor, Druger reflects on his many “misadventures” in this charming memoir. He shares classroom anecdotes of his efforts to make science fun and part of his students’ everyday lives. Druger offers insights on nurturing a successful marriage, on the value of childhood friendships, and on the perils and unexpected rewards of aging. The Misadventures of Marvin, both hilarious and heartfelt, is a unique depiction of life’s trials and bounties, one that will resonate with and inspire many readers.
Author
Marvin Druger is professor emeritus of biology and science education, retiring after forty-seven years at Syracuse University. He served as president of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and of the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE), and twice served as president for the Society for College Science Teachers (SCST). He is the recipient of the Robert Carleton Award from NSTA and the Honorary Emeritus Member Award from ASTE. He is the author of Strange Creatures and Other Poems, a book of poetry for children of all ages.

On April 30, 2010 Creekside Books & Coffee combined efforts with Greg Mortenson (Central Asia Institute Co-founder and humanitarian) and the Auburn Education Foundation (AEF) to provide local Auburn schools, churches and the state prison with new book donations. Books were distributed to these community organizations at the Cayuga-Onondaga Teacher Center, 34 Wright Avenue on April 30. In addition, Creekside Books & Coffee presented the Auburn Education Foundation with a check for $4000 to help them continue their efforts.
Angela Daddabbo, AEF Board Member and owner of the Auburn Public Theater was instrumental in arranging for Mortenson to present a lecture and book signing in March 2010 at the Auburn High School. While here, Mortenson felt a special connection with the Auburn Community and the surrounding area. This resulted in his commitment to help the area with their educational efforts by making these book donations. “Greg Mortenson’s humanitarian efforts have been a great asset to both the AEF’s efforts and the Auburn Community. We are grateful for his support to our goal of providing innovative programs that enhance the quality of education through extended learning opportunities within the Auburn Enlarged City School District. His efforts have greatly enhanced education within our community,” states Angela Daddabbo.
Mortenson and the Central Asian Institute (a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and support community-based education in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan), coordinated with Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books & Coffee to facilitate purchasing and distributing books throughout Auburn and its surrounding communities. Mortenson has generously donated over $20,000 worth of books to community organizations and Creekside has elaborated on this effort by donating a portion of the proceeds from these book purchases directly to the AEF.
“Greg’s mission to help community-based education was the perfect compliment to the Auburn Education Foundation’s efforts to improve the educational experiences of students in the Auburn Public Schools. His generosity and commitment to the community is overwhelming and we are proud to be part of this project,” states Erika Davis, Creekside Books & Coffee. Greg Mortenson continues to reach out to Creekside Books & Coffee to facilitate additional school donations in the area.
