Creekside Books & Coffee, an independent bookstore and coffeehouse in Skaneateles, presents Mary Humphrey author of Kids’ Yoga Book of Feelings on Thursday August 14, 2008 at 7PM.  Admission: $20.00 includes your own book, along with instructional workout.

“It’s motivating that adults recognize young children have issues that bring on stress,” says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books and Coffee.  “This book is one in a  set of tools that allows the child to de-stress through a fun creative outlet called “yoga.”  It also empowers, which is doubly wonderful. Don’t be surprised to find older siblings joining in and helping out!”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MARY HUMPHREY, a school librarian and yoga teacher, has taught children for more than thirty years. Introducing yoga to teachers, she has enabled others to bring the art of yoga and other mind/body techniques into the classroom. She is the author of Living the Hero’s Quest: Character Building through Action Research and a presenter at national conferences dedicated to children’s development and learning. She lives with her husband, daughters, and two cats in Skaneateles, New York.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Yoga is an art that emphasizes a calm, happy state of being. Yoga helps to harmonize your feelings to achieve a more balanced way of living. Each of the poses described has an animal or familiar object linked to the feeling it expresses. In addition, there’s an affirmation about the feeling being released. For example, as you assume the pose of the polar bear, you say, “I feel balanced and grounded,” just as a polar bear stands firmly on a patch of ice. Come celebrate yoga with the kids in this book as they demonstrate twenty poses from the Butterfly to the Opossum. Target age 6-13 yr.

The Gift of Giving- Summer Book Lover’s Party a Night to Remember

July 1, 2008  |  No Comments  |  481 views

Dear Friends,

Amelia Earhart said “No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.”

My heart was incredibly moved by this community’s gift of giving at the Summer Book Lover’s Party hosted by Laura’s List: Books for Women at Creekside Books & Coffee. Over 135 women and couples stood shoulder to shoulder, as Dr. Barbara Connor and Akuot Leek, a Lost Girl of Sudan inspired the audience with their personal experiences in the Sudan.

Leek’s brother is John Bul Dau, author of “God Grew Tired of Us”and a survivor of unsurmountable odds. During the civil strife in Duk Payuel, Sudan, Leek’s village was burnt to the ground, children abducted, and those that survived were forced to walk thousands of miles through alligator infested waters to find shelter in refugee camps. Leek now attends college in Central New York and serves as inspiration for women of all ages- that a resilient spirit can’t be broken.

As a result of this evening, funds were raised to help support the Duk Lost Boys Clinic. Together, we made a difference and for that I have tremendous gratitude.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation tells us that health benefits exist when one performs an act of kindness to include:

- The health benefits and sense of well-being return for hours or even days whenever the helping act is remembered.

- An increased sense of self-worth, greater happiness, and optimism, as well as a decrease in feelings of helplessness and depression, is achieved.

Write the book

you’ve always wanted to write!

Objectives: You have not forgotten the great wonder and mystery of being a child… You want to extend your own imagination to the young of today… And you have 101 ideas but no clear guide to help translate them into a polished, attractive book for children. This seminar will give you the tools to transform those ideas into well-constructed products, whether you are interested in developing picture books for young children, chapter books for older youth or other creative material for those in between.
In this course we will cover all aspects of getting started: generating ideas, developing plot, character, theme and structure. We will explore how writers appeal to the sensory and verbal worlds of children. We will also look into myth, folklore, and a little child psychology.

Format: Workshops are conducted at Creekside in an informal, interactive atmosphere. Instructor will offer mini-lectures, conduct small group discussions, and facilitate peer critiques. Participants will refine their own works-in-progress, in and out of class.

Instructor: For 20 years Bob Comenole has taught writing, literature and communications at several colleges, including Miami University, Siena College, the State University of New York and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Comenole, author of Bushel & Lamp and the novella The Long Night of Clement C Craggogre, has just completed work on a collection of short stories, Perplexed by the Egg & Other Stories, as well as a collection of essays. He was also the producer of the children’s television series, StoryBrook.

Fee: $50 for four 90-minute sessions / Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:30 pm
