Don’t Forget to Shop Local
Thursday, July 17, 2008 6:53 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 73 views

By Christine Briel / Skaneateles Design

It took me a couple of weeks to get into the groove of remembering to go to our local Farmer’s Market which is held up in the Skaneateles Community Center parking lot on Thursdays from 3:30PM - 6:30PM. Fortunately for me and my forgetful self there is also an Organic Farmer’s Market held on Saturday mornings in the Skaneateles P&C parking lot.

Don’t forget to shop local folks, it really is worth the extra effort. The food is so fresh, no middle man and I’ve found the pricing to be a little less than the grocery store. A complete win, win situation for the farmer and the consumer. This is such a gift for such a short period of time in CNY so don’t let it slip by. Plus you are sure to discover some unknown treasure that is available right in your own backyard. This year I discovered this out of this world olive oil sold by one of the vendors at the Thursday Farmer’s Market. We are going through it like crazy with all of our summer salad eating and today he assured me I could buy it all year round from him. It really is good stuff!

Oh yeah! My one other place where I totally love to shop local was just written up in an article by Julia Reich for the Auburn Citizen. Here’s a website link to the lovely article. Keep up the good work at Schoolhouse Farms and Borodino Market. Great picture of the inside of the Borodino Market!

The Greener Bean

Central New York’s premier Organic Farmers’ Market

Saturday’s 8am till noon June 14, 2008 through mid-October harvest dependant

Parking lot of the P&C Grocery store at 40 Fennell Street, Skaneateles.

New Produce Every Week:

Week One: Saturday June 14, 2008

Vendors opening the venue included Harvest Home Organics and Black Brook Farms www.blackbrookfarms.com. While the vendors supplied a wide array of produce, the weather was slightly less than companionable with a mix of mist and light showers. Joining our vendors were representatives of St. James Episcopalian Church’s Ecoministries – selling their enviro-friendly shopping bags for $2.00 a piece.

Week Two: Saturday June 21, 2008

The produce was popping, the weather was behaving and an armful of foot-traffic walked our way. The word is out and people are discovering this additional bounty in our community.

We welcomed Natalie and Roxanne of Wild Hare Farm, who will be temporarily selling with Harvest Home Organics.

We support the Thursday 3:30-6:30pm Farmers’ Market at the Skaneateles Community Center!

Skaneateles Farmers Market Beginning Their 10th Year
Thursday, April 10, 2008 7:23 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 74 views

cornucopia

Today I got my Town of Skaneateles Newsletter in the mail. It’s full of the typical information - the law being laid down for any of us thinking about home remodeling and the permit that we DEFINITELY need to obtain, transfer station rules and regulations (now I know what I can do with that car battery that’s been lying around for 6 months, and the ever so funny rantings about irresponsible pet owners :)

The best article in the newsletter had to do with the Farmers Market. With Spring having sprung in our local area I want for the cornucopia of food offered at our local Farmers Market up at the Community Center. They will be opened longer this year - calendar days and operating hours. Read the Town Newsletter article below. It was written by Councilor Dave Laxton.

This year marks the tenth year for the Skaneateles Farmers Market. Starting with a handful of vendors and limited selection, the market now has many more participants and a large variety of plants, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, eggs, meat and even wine and cheese!

This year the market will experience an expansion of dates and hours of operation. The market is responding to consumer demand and the ability of vendors to offer products over a longer time span. The market will open on Thursday, May 22 and continue until Christmas if a suitable indoor space is available after mid-October. Tentative plans reflect market hours will be the same: 3:30PM to 6:30PM. Hours may be expanded for the months of July and August, perhaps until 7:30PM.

As always, the focus is to buy locally produced products and buy from the producers. It is important that the dollars you spend stay in the local economy. This way everyone wins as the dollars are turned over locally, the consumer gets the freshest, safest, most nutritious product and you can talk with the person who made it, or grew it.

There is a need to get residents involved to support the local market. If you believe in environmental issues, a local food source, fresher and tastier produce, and knowledge of who and how your food is produced I encourage you to get involved. This could mean promotion by organizations, school groups, bringing the subject up at social gatherings, or merely reminding your neighbors that today is market day at the community center.

If anyone has any suggestion in regards to the Town sponsored Farmers Market call the Town Clerk, or Dave Laxton at 685-6427.
