One 11-year-old is leaving her mark on the world in crayon.
Chloe Strang collected more than 2,000 crayons for her effort Krayons 4 Kids. She is spending her school’s winter recess in Nicaragua donating those crayons as well as other school supplies to a school in San Jose Del Sur.
The sixth-grader at Skaneateles Middle School approached Applebee’s in Auburn and asked that staff collect any crayons after young patrons use them. Instead of throwing them away, the employees dropped them in a bucket Chloe provided that carries her logo. Read entire article here.

“Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all the things that one is thankful for.
But, in Skaneateles, it is also a time to go for a leisurely run and then drop a few dollars in a hat to benefit a local charity.
The Annual Turkey Trot in Skaneateles is never planned, but the crowd seems to have grown considerably over the years, said Dennis Owen, who is known to many as the event’s grand marshal.
“They try to call me the grand marshal, but I say, ‘No, I’m the grand turkey,’” Owen said.
Aside from Owen, the Turkey Trot is possible with the help of Kevin Cahill, Jimmy Gregg, Bill Marquardt and Jimmy Strodel.”

“The Skaneateles Lightning Swim Team will hold a Swim-A-Thon on Nov. 14 at the Skaneateles Community Center.
This Swim-A-Thon will provide funds, which will enable the club to maintain its strong swimming program, buy new equipment and help fund home meets. The Skaneateles Lightning currently has 30 swimmers in the program, and has several top-caliber high school swimmers. The swimmers will swim up to 200 lengths during the fundraiser, earring a specified amount of money per length. Swim-A-Thons are conducted across the country by many of the more than 2,600 member clubs of USA Swimming.”

“Morgan Ellithorpe grew up in Skaneateles and for the past three summers she has worked as the “mail girl” aboard the Barbara S. Wiles mail boat on Skaneateles Lake. As my Red Hat group, the Gorges Gals of Ithaca, was enjoying our recent mail boat cruise, however, we found in chatting with Morgan that she is a senior at Cornell University, majoring in communication and psychology, graduating in May 2010 and going on to graduate school.
Where does she live while attending Cornell? In her apartment on the Danby Road! It never ceases to amaze me how we find ourselves just six degrees of separation from each other in so many instances.”

After having the “milfoil monster” visit Bijou, and discussing the large green footprints
at the door of the salon, I realized, we really are avoiding a huge problem in our lake. Yeah there are the guys cleaning it up, but why…and how? Who is funding it? Well after a little bit of research and after talking to the “skaneateles pool boys” (their reference, not mine;) I learned a little bit more and decided to try to help a little too! It doesn’t take much, just a few bucks, every little tiny bit helps!! We all love our lake, but how long do we expect it to be as perfect as it is?? I see a huge difference in the lake from when I first moved here over 13 years ago!
So help me…

“The Skaneateles sisters have a staff of about 14 volunteers.
They sell their lemony drink door-to-door, and they deliver from their stand. They even have a sponsor, who has asked to be anonymous, who is contributing $1,000 toward the cost of running the stand, such as buying the lemonade mix, plastic cups and shirts all the volunteers wear. This is the fourth year Jessica, 12, and Emily, 11, have sold lemonade in the village of Skaneateles on nice weekends to raise money for charity. Last year their stand, Dave’s Lemonade Kids, raised $2,500.”
