Rhett Weiss: How Google has shaped our first president’s life
We finally know what Rhett Weiss has been up to these past three years.
We all knew that Rhett, our club’s first president and one of its most loyal supporters, had a really important job and that that job was with Google, but until May 1, all of the other details were hazy.
Rhett has been working for Google since 2005. For the first few years, due to the sensitive nature of his job, he could say very little due to confidentiality issues. Today, he revealed that for the past three years he has been leading the team that acquires and develops data centers for Google throughout the world.
Google was founded as a graduate student research project out of Stanford University in 1998. The first data center was a hodge podge of computers pieced together. One of the disk cases broke and the folks used Legos to hold it together. This is the reason for the colors in the Google logo.
Google is such a new company that Rhett has been with it longer than 85 percent of the employees.
The corporate culture is to work had but also encourages employees to be creative and play hard. The company’s headquarters features in addition to the traditional rows of cubicles, a massage chair, pool tables and a climbing wall.
The data centers Rhett is responsible for developing are the heart of the company, he explained. They store all of the data sent over the Internet. Their effectiveness has a direct effect on the products and services Google offers, which includes much, much more than just the search engine. More data centers are always needed within close proximity to population centers to maintain speed. Speed on the Internet is measured by milliseconds or less. It only takes a few blinks of an eye to lose a customer, he said.
Each center represents about a $600 million investment by Google, creating hundreds of construction jobs and effecting about $1 billion of gross state product. They employ about 100 to 200 people and become a magnet for other companies. One such center was developed in Lenoir, North Carolina on the site of a former furniture factory.
As the negotiator for the data center acquisition and development, Rhett is responsible for all of the component transactions, including purchasing the land, electricity, water and workforce. Utility issues are a huge issue because each of these centers uses more power than the Town and Village of Skaneateles combined! The company does its best to follow green building practices, using water to manage the heat the massive rows of computers produces each day.
Rhett closed his talk with a humorous look at a YouTube video “How Google Saved My Marriage.” Check it out at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi2O4Kvlscs. It should be noted that YouTube is now owned by Google!

Red Rooster Pub: Where a Steak tastes like a Steak
New owner Tom Benedict wants the Red Rooster Pub to offer good food at a fair price in an atmosphere comfortable for the whole family.
Tom purchased the restaurant earlier this year and is in the process of renovating the Skaneateles Falls eatery. His vision for the Red Rooster is to create more of a family atmosphere so people think of it as a restaurant with a bar instead of the other way around.
He plans to rearrange the furniture and add tables. Tom also is looking into replacing the flooring adding historic photographs of the former Rodak’s and hotel and community to the walls. The plans also call for kitchen upgrades so the menu can expand from pub/lunch type food to include more traditional dinners. As for the menu, Tom would like to see basic food – nothing too fancy. He has added prime rib dinners and would like to bring back fish fry Fridays and a good Roast Beef sandwich. So far, Tom says, his best compliment was from a customer who thanked him for the steak, commenting it was the first time in a long time that [the customer] got a steak that tasted like a steak and not some type of sauce or glaze.
Before purchasing the Red Rooster, Tom had worked for the past six years at the Mandana Inn during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. When the Mandana Inn closed for the winter, Tom frequently picked up hours at the Red Rooster. He considered briefly making an offer for the Mandana Inn when it came up for sale, but backed the numbers didn’t work for him so he approached the prior owner of the Red Rooster. Within a week, he was in negotiations to purchase and the deal was completed earlier this year.
Although this is his first foray into restaurant ownership, Tom is no stranger to the restaurant business. His father owned a restaurant in the Utica area, where he grew up and later in Baldwinsville. He also helped his brother operate the Plainville Turkey restaurant in Cicero.
Tom has lived in the area since 2000. He is married to the former Pat Delaney. Together, they have two children ages 9 and 5.
The Red Rooster is located in at 4618 Jordan Road in Skaneateles Falls across from Welch Allyn. For reservations or more information call 685-2326.
This Month in Rotary History: Rotary in Cuba
The first Rotary club to be organized outside an English-speaking country was established in Havana, Cuba, 29 April 1916, with 22 charter members. The club was admitted to Rotary on 1 June 1916.
During 1923, the Rotary Club of Havana celebrated its seventh anniversary, in what became a very busy year. The club sponsored a carnival attended by more than 1,500 children, won a prohibition against bullfighting in Cuba, worked to get the city’s water sanitized and properly purified, and obtained pavement repairs in certain areas.
By the time the RI Convention was held in Havana, 9-14 June 1940, 42 of the 48 clubs that had been chartered in Cuba were still active. Another 20 clubs would be chartered thereafter, ending with the Rotary Club of San Cristobal, on 16 October 1957.
Rotary clubs in Cuba produced four RI directors – Mario Nuñoz Mesa, 1922-23; Felix Silva Fernandez, 1936-37; Manuel Galigarcia Hernández, 1942-43; and Horacio Navarrete, 1953-54. All clubs in Cuba were terminated by 31 January 1979.
