The Rotary club is one of those groups that you can be proud to be part of. The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world. Our own town of Skaneateles has 2 distinct Rotary clubs: Skaneateles Rotary Club and Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club. They both have many programs and projects that they support - visit their website for more information.
When Rotary International President-elect D.K. Lee announced the 2008-09 RI theme “Make Dreams Real” he said he was in disbelief when he learned that 30,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria. With that in mind, the following invocation was suggested:
We pray for children…
who put chocolate fingers everywhere,
who like to be tickled,
who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants,
who sneak Popsicles before supper,
who erase holes in math workbooks,
who can never find their shoes.
And we pray for those
who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire,
who can’t bound down the street in a new pair of sneakers,
who never “counted potatoes,”
who are born in places we wouldn’t be caught dead,
who never go to the circus,
who live in an X-rated world.
We pray for children
who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
who sleep with the dog and bury goldfish,
who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money,
who cover themselves with Band-Aids and sing off key,
who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink,
who slurp their soup. (more…)

I’m sure we all know the old saying that curiosity killed the cat but I’m going crazy with curiosity. Over the past few months I have continually seen a lady that jogs up and down West Genesee Street in the village of Skaneateles. She usually turns around at the red light where Route 41 intersects and then heads back down the hill, goes through the village and heads back up the hill.
One Saturday morning she put me to shame as I saw her already jogging when I headed out to do a 3 mile lap and when I came back she was still jogging. I’m curious as to who this lady is but really just want to say … my hat’s off to you, congratulations, keep up the good work, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!

I’ve come across alot of people blogging about Skaneateles in the past month or so. Most of them appear to be visitors. There are alot of interesting folks out there saying some nice things about the place we all like to call “home” and they have captured some beautiful pics.

A blogger who attended the recent Thumbstall Quilt Guild blogs about some of the beautiful quilts and how this year’s accomodations for the show were much roomier. Above is pictured a block of the month quilt that she captured.
A Skaneateles town local blogs about being a Tourist in my own town and has captured some beautiful pictures of various places around the village and along the lake.
This blogger took some really nice pics of the along Skaneateles lake over a period of about a week July 5th to about July 11th. There are some cool ones of some kids playing with Sparklers at night.
Also I found the Fergusons Family Blog and a neat picture of one of the kids that had captured a crayfish.
We get a lot of activity around here this time of year (sometimes it can be frustrating) but it’s nice to take a moment and see the experience that visitors walk away with.

Claire Affleck Training will be hosting a Horse Camp the week of July 14th-18th, 9am-3pm. The camp is open to all children ages 7 & up. We encourage both beginners and more experienced riders to join us.
Besides working on riding skills, students will learn proper horsemanship which includes the daily care of the horse, basic vet care, feeding, cleaning, and will be able to watch a demonstration given by a horse shoer.
We not only focus on horse skills, our hope is also that children gain life skills such as self confidence, self esteem, leadership skills, and positive communication.
For more information please contact Claire Affleck at 315.317.2608, affleck03@sbc.edu , or www.claireafflecktraining.com.

From antique and classic boats, to polo and opera, to blues and barbecue—Skaneateles has it all during the last weekend of July.
Antique and Classic Boat Show – July 25-27
The Antique and Classic Boat Show, hosted by the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Finger Lakes Chapter (FLC) of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with displays on water and land (in Clift Park), musical entertainment, and activities for the entire family.
Among the land displays will be one depicting a slice-of-life from the early 1940s, when the boats were popular.
The backdrop of the display—created by FLC member Arnie Rubenstein—is an 8-foot-square photo of the Skaneateles Boat Co. and its staff members, marking production of the 1,000th Comet sailboat. A workbench in front of the photo contains a 1941 telephone, a 1941 radio and a mannequin dressed as one of the boat company’s craftsmen. Visitors who pick up the phone will hear gossip about costs of the day. The radio station will be “tuned” to five channels—one with a recording of the news bulletin announcing the attack on Pearl Harbor, two with period music, and two with old radio shows. The display will be on view in the lobby of M&T Bank, 33 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles, for a few weeks prior to the show. Following the show, it will be donated to the Skaneateles Historical Society. Skaneateles Suites doesn’t like that locals can’t enjoy the lake very easily.
The result is a <Community Rate> on kayak and canoe rentals.
- Go to Skaneateles Suites Boutique Hotel at 12 Fennell Street 315-685-7568 www.skaneatelessuites.com
- First Come first served, no reservations taken
- Somehow demonstrate you are a <local>. Examples would be Notarized Birth Certificate with raised seal, or, just knowing about www.skaneatelestalk.com would qualify. [Just kidding, offering your local phone number would be just fine.]
- Rent a kayak or canoe for a couple of hours for 10 bucks [regular $30]
- Better yet, say: “I am a local and I want you to give half my 10 bucks to the Historical Society Boat Museum Fund“. And we will. See http://skaneateleshistoricalsociety.org/ to join and contribute to the <new> Boat Museum.
Further:
We have two Pontoon Boats kept in a Village BoatHouse, <very> convenient. These are a little trickier to handle, especially Weekends, but we will have a Community Rate on these.
Take Note:
Curt teaches the Coast Guard Boating Safety Course and all rentals include a lesson in “How to Not Look like a Fool at the Dock”, as well as a stern reminder about drinking and boating.
Curt and the Suite Dreams Team
315-685-7568
** Disclaimer: locals <may> be asked to wait if we have lot’s of regular <paying> customers on beautiful weekend days.
