FamilyTimes article about buying local includes Borodino Market
Monday, August 11, 2008 11:46 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 61 views

Early in the summer I rode my bike with my daughter out to Borodino Market (our first trip to see the family farm for this season) and blogged on here about our great purchase of blackberry jam.

About a month later a nice lady from the local periodical FamilyTimes called me on the phone to inquire about my families habits of buying local, how important it was to us and how we emphasized it with our children (she came across the aforementioned blog post about the jam). She did a really nice write up on buying local in the August 2008 copy of Family Times in the article titled “Livin’ La Vida Local” - below is an excerpt of our conversation and the mention of our families favorite local treasure Borodino Market.

“… Skaneateles mother Christine Briel was initially driven to go local by the quality of produce grown around her home. “Freshness is the biggest thing,” says Briel, who has one child in college and one in high school, “but the connection with people who actually grew the stuff is really important, too.”

She doesn’t always find time in her busy schedule to stop at the weekly farmers’ market in her town. “If I miss the market, I will go to a local farm foods store like the Borodino Market,” Briel says. “Especially with our long winters, I find it really valuable to get fresh produce during the summer months.”

What they don’t buy from local farmers, the Briels grow in their back yard. This year, they will get radishes, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, beans and peas from their garden …”

Quick note to all readers here
Thursday, July 24, 2008 1:36 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 78 views

Hello all, this is Chris Briel. I recently noticed that our blog’s Business Directory page was not working, and I’m not sure how long it was like that. I have been busy with a new project over the last month or so and usually only work on SkaneatelesTalk 1 time a week. Please if anyone notices something that isn’t working properly, don’t hesitate to shoot me an e-mail. It won’t be looked at as annoying, exactly the opposite :)

Thanks and the Business Directory is currently working.

Don’t Forget to Shop Local

It took me a couple of weeks to get into the groove of remembering to go to our local Farmer’s Market which is held up in the Skaneateles Community Center parking lot on Thursdays from 3:30PM - 6:30PM. Fortunately for me and my forgetful self there is also an Organic Farmer’s Market held on Saturday mornings in the Skaneateles P&C parking lot.

Don’t forget to shop local folks, it really is worth the extra effort. The food is so fresh, no middle man and I’ve found the pricing to be a little less than the grocery store. A complete win, win situation for the farmer and the consumer. This is such a gift for such a short period of time in CNY so don’t let it slip by. Plus you are sure to discover some unknown treasure that is available right in your own backyard. This year I discovered this out of this world olive oil sold by one of the vendors at the Thursday Farmer’s Market. We are going through it like crazy with all of our summer salad eating and today he assured me I could buy it all year round from him. It really is good stuff!

Oh yeah! My one other place where I totally love to shop local was just written up in an article by Julia Reich for the Auburn Citizen. Here’s a website link to the lovely article. Keep up the good work at Schoolhouse Farms and Borodino Market. Great picture of the inside of the Borodino Market!

The Skaneateles village was all a buzz when I went into town this afternoon to run a few errands. The Village Merchants on Genesee, Jordan and Fennell Streets have great deals for the whole family.  The Festival, or Sidewalk Sale as it sometimes called, takes place Thursday July 17th at 9AM -8PM,  Friday the 18th again 9AM - 8PM and then ends on Saturday at 5PM. There will also be balloon blowing for the kids!  This is an awesome family event that takes place annually in the village of Skaneateles. If you have any questions call the Skaneateles Chamber at 315-685-0552 for more information.

Who is that lady?
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:09 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 97 views

I’m sure we all know the old saying that curiosity killed the cat but I’m going crazy with curiosity. Over the past few months I have continually seen a lady that jogs up and down West Genesee Street in the village of Skaneateles. She usually turns around at the red light where Route 41 intersects and then heads back down the hill, goes through the village and heads back up the hill.

One Saturday morning she put me to shame as I saw her already jogging when I headed out to do a 3 mile lap and when I came back she was still jogging. I’m curious as to who this lady is but really just want to say … my hat’s off to you, congratulations, keep up the good work, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!

Awesome people blogging about Skaneateles lately …
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:02 pm - Christine Briel  1 Comment | 92 views

I’ve come across alot of people blogging about Skaneateles in the past month or so. Most of them appear to be visitors. There are alot of interesting folks out there saying some nice things about the place we all like to call “home” and they have captured some beautiful pics.

A blogger who attended the recent Thumbstall Quilt Guild blogs about some of the beautiful quilts and how this year’s accomodations for the show were much roomier. Above is pictured a block of the month quilt that she captured.

A Skaneateles town local blogs about being a Tourist in my own town and has captured some beautiful pictures of various places around the village and along the lake.

This blogger took some really nice pics of the along Skaneateles lake over a period of about a week July 5th to about July 11th. There are some cool ones of some kids playing with Sparklers at night.

Also I found the Fergusons Family Blog and a neat picture of one of the kids that had captured a crayfish.

We get a lot of activity around here this time of year (sometimes it can be frustrating) but it’s nice to take a moment and see the experience that visitors walk away with.
