Nurse Megan FitzGerald shares her experiences working in “Haiti, After the Quake” at Creekside Books & Coffee on Thursday, May 6th at 7:00 PM.
Pediatric nurse practitioner and local resident, Megan FitzGerald, shares her experiences working with two different non-governmental organization in Haiti providing disaster relief and medical care to victims of the earthquake. Members of the community have asked how they can help so Megan and Creekside Books & Coffee are working together to provide a presentation and slide show to describe the situation in Haiti and discuss ways that residents can help.
Megan was a member of Crudems first trauma team in to treat victims of the earthquake at Hopital Sacre Coeur in Milot, 90 miles north of Port-au-Prince. Earthquake victims were brought in by the US Navy, Coastguard and the French. She moved on to Project Hope on board of the USNA Comfort Ship which is a 1,000 bed floating hospital I the harbor of Port-au-Prince.
She will return for a third trip to the USS Comfort, another Navy hospital ship anchored off the coast of Haiti. Her photos from her trips show the dire circumstances that many Haitians endured. “Ninety percent of the children had traumatic injuries,” Megan said. “They weren’t scrapes. Buildings had been falling on these little kids.” Many children died because they were unable to receive care in time. After everything she’d seen, Megan faced a simple choice, “You give in to despair, or you try to save more children.”
For more information, please view an article printed by Sean Kirst in the Post Standard on Feb. 10, 2010. “Suffering of little children pulls her back” (to Haiti).

April is National Poetry Month and Creekside Books & Coffee has planned a special evening honoring local poets at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 28th.
“It’s always exciting to spotlight the work of local poets. Plus, the addition of students from State Street reciting poems from teacher Janet Fagel’s program makes this an event that you won’t want to miss,” says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books & Coffee.
State Street School teacher Janet Fagel will bring her current and former students to recite poetry from their annual “Poetry on Parade” program. Mrs. Fagel won the “Friend of Poetry Award” by the American Pen Women last spring in honor of her five-year poetry program. Sennett poet Bobbie Panek focuses on the musical quality of language and the interplay of words and thoughts. She recently published her first collection of poems, Morning Walks Zen Meditations. Singer songwriter and poet Michael Jennings has published five collections of poetry. His poetry has won numerous prizes and awards including a CAPS grant from NYS. Former Skaneateles English teacher Elizabeth Patton has published poetry and articles in several professional journals, literary magazines, anthologies and newspapers.
Creekside Books & Coffee is located at 35 Fennell Street in Skaneateles. The bookstore is the only retail store in the village selling new hardcover and paperback books as well as toys, gifts, greeting cards and other merchandise. The coffeehouse features the freshest roasted coffee in town, a light fare menu, live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and a pleasant atmosphere to relax and enjoy.
Local Skaneateles author Tom Clarke will be signing his latest book A Garden of Love at the Creekside Books & Coffee on May 8th at 1:00pm. The book is based on the flowers in the Gethsemane Prayer Garden at Faith Chapel in Onondaga Hill. The discussion will center around that garden and the writing of the book. The book uses flowers and scripture to reveal the deep love and beauty of Jesus Christ.
Here is an excerpt from the book about the forget-me-not flower:
“The forget-me-not is one of the few perennials in northern climates that have true light-blue flowers with complimentary light green leaves. Standing only as tall as one’s ankles with tiny flowers that are as delicate as fine lace, it somehow brings thoughts of a properly set table with exquisite tea, chocolate-raspberry truffles for two, and pleasing conversations. On that table are delicately decorated china plates, white linen napkins and a silver candlestick that emits enough light so that the intimacy of the moment may be enjoyed. Oh how great is our Lord!
The delicate forget-me-not radiates a certain happiness and contentment” “Please stay here just a little longer, I so appreciate our time together.” It seems to say with all sincerity, “Can you tell me about…,” and so the conversation goes on for a while longer.
Intimacy may be one of the hardest concepts to describe, possibly because it is so profound. Intimate conversations can ensue, yet no audible sounds would necessarily be spoken. In it are the heartaches, the joys, the successes and failures of our children, our hopes, trials, pains, and yes of course our love.
Intimacy may be with a spouse, a parent, some other relative, or a best friend. The most intimate of relationship is intended to be with our Lord.”
Included with the book is a free greeting card with a photo of a rose, allowing the book to be given as a gift.

Creekside Books & Coffee will be hosting a book signing event on Saturday April 10, at 1 PM, featuring Tim Green, Skaneateles resident, author and the “Renaissance Man” of sports as he has been named by both Sports Illustrated and the Los Angeles Times. This event will celebrate the upcoming baseball season by featuring Tim’s new middle reader book, Rivals, scheduled for release on March 23, 2010. In this gripping sequel to his middle reader book, Baseball Great, Green delivers a hard-hitting look at what some teams will do to win.
At this event, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Tim and have him sign a personal message on their books. He will also treat his fans to a special reading of excerpts from Rivals. We know Tim’s middle reader fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of this sequel and they will not be disappointed by Rivals or by this event, says Creekside owner Erika L. Davis. Copies of both Baseball Great and Rivals will be available for purchase at this event.

Author Eileen Flanagan will be speaking at Creekside Books and Coffee in Skaneateles on March 14 at 2pm about her new book, The Wisdom to Know the Difference: When to Make a Change and When to Let Go. Praised by the Dalai Lama and other notable writers, the book explores how to apply the message of the Serenity Prayer, accepting the things we cannot change, and changing those we can.
Flanagan has been traveling widely since the book’s release by Tarcher/Penguin in September 2009. She is thrilled to return to Skaneateles, where she has visited friends on vacation for a number of years. She will also be leading a retreat at Stella Maris retreat center during the weekend of March 12-14.
