I pulled the following text and pics from the Dick Shaffer Race for Hope 2008 flyer via their website. If you would like more information visit the Race4Hope website.

race 4 hopeIn May 2007, along with the Borodino Fire Department, Scott Grimshaw, a friend and local cyclist, and his family, planned an event to honor Dick’s memory — the First Annual Race 4 Hope, a 24-mile bike event. Cyclists from all over New York State came to show their support. In honor of Dick’s love for family, friends and children, they also held a free 4-mile ride. Over 40 local children and their families came to ride. Their pride in participating in this fundraising event was evident in their faces. Dick’s HOPE cycles on.

Join them for the 2nd Annual Race 4 Hope, A Bicycle Ride and Race in Memory of Dick Shaffer on May 24, 2008. They are supporting Golisano Children’s Hospital Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Skaneateles Journal is Seeking Photos and Stories …

Skan looking east - thumb

By Christine Briel / skaneatelesDesign

You may have seen the big sign above the Skaneateles Village office on Genesee Street for the 175th Anniversary Celebration. Amazing 175 years! I bet there are a lot of stories to tell and just as many photos to go along with them.

The merchants in the village and town are doing some research on their buildings and storefronts to learn their histories. They will be posting any information or photographs they can dig up on the histories of their locations, from May 20th to June 1st this year.

The Skaneateles Journal has gathered a few stories. They are asking for everyone’s help in looking for more stories and/or photos related to Skaneateles’ past. This might mean stories of people buying fruit at a produce stand with their father in the 1950s, to stories of people getting married at the Sherwood in the 1970s (photos too), or the first time a family ever launched their boat on the lake, possibly a photo of your child’s first day of school. They are looking for anything you would like to share related to Skaneateles’ past.

If you have a story or photo that you would like to share with the Skaneateles Journal you can either call the editor, Jessica Soule, at 315-283-1615 or send her an e-mail at news@skaneatelesjournal.

Let’s make it an awesome 175th!!!! Happy Birthday Skaneateles :)

Before the Lightning came The Mower
Saturday, March 22, 2008 8:36 am - pickupkrauterteam  0 Comments | 80 views

From A Passenger’s Point of view

I have been a passenger on Sailboats since I could walk. Of course I sailed way before life jackets and sailing lessons and large boats. I sailed from the Pump House on Skaneateles Lake with my father, but not because of any great talent or interest. I liked my father and the ride, and he liked the extra weight which was easily moved from one side of the boat to the other to help balance things out. It was all very exciting sitting in the bottom of the boat and then suddenly being quickly uplifted to the other side before my side sank.

mower-080001.jpgThis boat was a Mower, A sailboat made before the Lightning. From a passenger’s point of view this was a comfortable boat. The lines of the boat were round and rarely jabbed you. The bow and deck were long enough to lie on as a child or adult.

When I wanted to “hang out” on the lake I looked for a captain and his boat. Bill Dean was the captain and my sister, my cousin, I, and anyone invited were the passengers. There were no motorboats. The Mower had to be our fun and fun it was! The captain hooked a trapeze on the Mower and offered the passenger an exciting hike out over the lake. The friendly large bow and deck of the Mower allowed this to be quite easy. I doubt the speed was record breaking but the fun was as much as we could think up at the time.

The Mower also had its romance as the teenage years came around. My cousin took a Mower to Mid-Lakes Golf course and spent a summer restoring it while he courted his wife-to-be. I was invited to sail to Borodino in the middle of the night. Then the passage of time took the Mower to my younger brother. He put it in a barn for awhile. He then traded it to my husband for his Honda motorcycle. When we lived in Ithaca the Mower was put into Cayuga Lake where it held its youngest passenger…..a 2-week old baby. This was not too exciting for the captain so the Mower was put in a barn as a boat to be again restored.

It remained in the barn for 10 years or so. My family returned to the Skaneateles area and wanted to be on the lake once again. Therefore, my husband got it in shape and put it into the water at the Skaneateles Country Club so we could have a sailing membership. Every year it promptly sank for a few days while it was swelling up. The children had to help my husband bail it and sail it on Father’s day. We raced it a few times and then just kept it for lounging in the middle of the lake. The children learned to sail but never loved the preparation for sailing. The soft lines, great bow, wide decks, and no sliding stays were always pleasant for passengers but not so great for racing. I guess that (and the high cost to make the original design) is why there are hundreds of Lightnings coming to the Country Club and the Mower now sits in someone’s barn waiting for yet another restoration and a loving passenger.

I am not sure any time will come that will put the Mower at the top of someone’s memory but it remains as one of my cherished memories. Who am I?

I am just a happy passenger……. never a bailer, never a designer, never a captain, just a willing passenger who will pull the jib sheet when directed. Marion Wiles Krauter

Skaneateles, NY Memory Map
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 2:34 pm - Christine Briel  0 Comments | 107 views

By Christine Briel / Skaneateles Design

skanmemorymap.jpgI visit Flickr.com periodically just to see what new pics of Skaneateles have been uploaded buy users on there. A couple days ago the user EugeneDebs created a Memory Map by using a Google Earth pic of Skaneateles, NY and then geotagging places on the map that were relevant to his/her youth. It’s actually pretty cool. You have to hover over the map and you will see boxes appear in different areas. Each box has a “memory” if you will, of some aspect of this user’s past/experiences. The marking over the Graveyard states “The graveyard. How many nights we snuck out of the house to ramble in the graveyard . . . hoping to find a ghost.”

The area where there are currently many shops (Etc., Vermont Green Mountain, Orchard Orginals) is represented as “Overtown. Shops where you could still buy penny candy and the since-disappeared Colonial movie theater where you could watch B-movies on the cheap.”

The Hannum Street section “Hannum Street. My grandparents moved here from Syracuse during the Great Depression. Boyhood home of my father. Where I spent the first year of my life.”

A section of land between Orchard St. and Jordan “Vacant lots. Where I smoked my first cigar - - hidden in a clump of trees with cigars stolen from my grandfather’s humidor.”

There are more than 10 geotagged areas on the map. Maybe with the clues this user has left someone with some Skaneateles history could identify the Flickr user … or he/she will just remain anonymous and have memory tagged Skaneateles, NY. Here is the link to the Memory Map for EugeneDebs - Very Cool!!

1910school.jpgI found an image of Skaneateles High School on Kenneth Wooster’s website today. It states that he took the picture from an eBay auction. Unfortunately he just missed winning the bid. The image is of Skaneateles High School in 1910.

highschool.jpgNow fast forward to a current image of Skaneateles High School. They look a little different don’t they? Amazing the changes that can be made in 100 years! I kind of like the look of the old school, the pillars are very stately.
