One 11-year-old is leaving her mark on the world in crayon.

Chloe Strang collected more than 2,000 crayons for her effort Krayons 4 Kids. She is spending her school’s winter recess in Nicaragua donating those crayons as well as other school supplies to a school in San Jose Del Sur.

The sixth-grader at Skaneateles Middle School approached Applebee’s in Auburn and asked that staff collect any crayons after young patrons use them. Instead of throwing them away, the employees dropped them in a bucket Chloe provided that carries her logo. Read entire article here.

By Holly Knott

Marcellus artist Holly Knott is honored to be one of 363 internationally selected quilters whose work is included in the newly released book “500 Art Quilts – An Inspiring Collection of Contemporary Work,” published by Lark Books / Sterling Publishing, Inc., written by Ray Hemachandra and Karey Bresenhan. Holly has 2 contemporary art quilts in the book – “Buttercup,” a quilt based on a photograph she took of a cow in Marcellus, and “New Hope, PA, Reflections I,” based on a photograph she took of a historic rowhome in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

From Lark’s website: “A vibrant and growing community of crafters has embraced quilting, and this outstanding international collection will inspire and captivate them. Juried by Karey Bresenhan, one of the most prominent figures in quilting, it presents 500 magnificent contemporary art quilts, made in fabric and other media, and showcasing diverse designs, materials, and techniques. From their very inception, these quilts were destined for display rather than practical use, with an extraordinary quality of image, form, line, and composition. About the author: Juror Karey Bresenhan is the founder, president and director of Quilts Inc., the parent company of three American shows for the public and two for the quilting industry trade. Quilt Inc.’s shows include the International Quilt Festival/Houston, the world’s largest annual quilt show. Time to invest in a CSA at Schoolhouse Farms

January 14, 2010  |  1 Comment  |  356 views

By: Schoolhouse Farms

Schoolhouse Farms will be offering a CSA this year. We will be offering only 20 shares so don’t delay. These shares will be made up of Schoolhouse Farms produce. Produce that is grown without the use of pesticides at our eco-ganic micro farm near Skaneateles, New York. We will also include some other unique items as the season and harvest progresses. Items we believe will enhance what we have included in the weekly share. All the information you need to know about this limited offer are available at our Schoolhouse Farms LocalHarvest site or you can paste this in your browser www.localharvest.org/farms/M15378

We are excitedly planning your shares this winter in anticipation of our best growing season ever.

A CSA is a joint venture between Farmer (us) and the Partner (you)! You can feel good about supporting an aspect of farming that receives no local state or federal subsidies. The sweat is all ours but the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is ours to share with you. It is a win win situation that really keeps things local. A CSA has some assumed risk on both our parts as we have no control over mother nature. Last year was a perfect storm of conditions that almost completely wiped out our tomato harvest. We learned a lot from this and reacted as quickly as possible by planting alternative crops in an attempt to stave off the huge hole in the harvest. Thankfully our actions helped to prevent a lost season of farming. Admittedly people were disappointed about the tomato blight but were also excited that we filled the void.

Farming is an on going education for us and for everybody who hitches their spiritual wagon onto our dream. Schoolhouse Farms has come a long way in 12 years and encourages you to visit the farm and our historic one room schoolhouse we call the Borodino Market!

Skaneateles Middle School

A fire chief on the scene says the fire started in the boiler room. He says the biggest issue was the amount of smoke because it is not a well ventilated area. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for “respiratory reasons.”

The district describes the fire saying there was no structural damage and only minor smoke damage.

UPDATE: Skaneateles Middle and High Schools are closed Tuesday because of the fire. There will be no activities at either school.  The Waterman and State Street schools will remain open. Entire article found here.
