NEWS & NOTES
Chilean districts organize efforts to aid earthquake victims
Rotary districts in Chile are organizing efforts to aid tens of thousands of homeless people in areas devastated by a powerful earthquake and tsunami that struck the country’s Pacific coast on 27 February.
Chile’s government, along with other international aid organizations, has supplied food and water to desperate survivors as the death toll has risen to nearly 800. Many coastal towns were destroyed, first by the 8.8 magnitude quake, then by surging tsunami waves. Luis Veliz Severino, governor of District 4320, has allocated an initial US$9,500 to relief efforts. Four clubs in the hardest-hit areas of Bío-Bío and Maule have set up donation drives for clothes, shoes, and blankets.

A ShelterBox response team is en route to Chile’s capital, Santiago, to deliver an initial shipment of 448 ShelterBox containers. The Rotary Club of Santiago will conduct an emergency meeting on 3 March with the ShelterBox team to decide where to distribute the containers.

“The full extent of the damage in Chile is yet to be seen, but there will undoubtedly be a need for emergency shelter,” says John Leach, head of operations for ShelterBox. “Our response team will work closely with Rotarians in Santiago to make sure the aid reaches the people who need it most.”

RI President John Kenny offered condolences via e-mail to governors of districts 4320, 4340, 4350, and 4360 in Chile. He asks Rotarians to learn the latest on Rotary’s relief efforts and how they can help as it becomes available at www.rotary.org.

RI President urges continued support for District 7020 Haiti Relief Efforts
Almost two months after a powerful earthquake shook Haiti, signs of devastation are everywhere, underscoring the long road to recovery that lies ahead. RI President John Kenny, who visited Haiti in late February, urged Rotarians to work with District 7020’s Haiti earthquake relief team coordinating aid to the nation.

“What they are basically saying is, ‘What we need is money,’ so they can buy locally the implements that are needed to help the reconstruction,” Kenny said.

Hedge Fund Basics
Despite much negative publicity in the past year, hedge funds were designed to protect against market fluctuations.
So says Evan Dreyfuss, a portfolio manager for Talon Asset Management, with an office here in Skaneateles.
Contrary to the media’s depiction of hedge funds over the past year, most hedge funds goal is to always make more money in the long term with less volatility in the short term, he said.
Hedge funds typically are set up to be patient and invest at the right time. The problem over the past several years was that investors purchased at the wrong time and were highly leveraged resulting in a major collapse when lenders issued their margin calls in March of this year.

Historic Moments: Twenty Years of Women in Rotary
Twenty years after the Council on Legislation’s vote, Rotary has nearly 188,000 female Rotarians. Women have served in leadership positions as high as the RI Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees.
The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.
“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.
The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.
The response to the decision was overwhelming: By 1990, the number of female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000. Following is a timeline of women in Rotary.

1950. An enactment to delete the word male from the Standard Rotary Club Constitution is proposed by a Rotary club in India for the Council on Legislation meeting at the 1950 RI Convention.

1964. The Council on Legislation agenda contains an enactment proposed by a Rotary club in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to permit the admission of women into Rotary clubs. Delegates vote that it be withdrawn. Two other proposals to allow women to be eligible for honorary membership are also withdrawn.

1972. As more women begin reaching higher positions in their professions, more clubs begin lobbying for female members. A U.S. Rotary club proposes admitting women into Rotary at the 1972 Council on Legislation.

1977. Three separate proposals to admit women into membership are submitted to the Council on Legislation for consideration at the 1977 RI Convention. A Brazilian club makes a different proposal to admit women as honorary members. The Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, admits women as members in violation of the RI Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Because of this violation, the club’s membership in Rotary International is terminated in March 1978, only to be reinstated in September 1986.

1980. The RI Board of Directors and Rotary clubs in India, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States propose an enactment to remove from the RI and club constitutions and bylaws all references to members as male persons .

1983-86. In a lawsuit filed by the Duarte club in 1983, the California Superior Court rules in favor of Rotary International, upholding gender-based qualification for membership in California Rotary clubs. In 1986, the California Court of Appeals reverses the lower court’s decision, preventing the enforcement of the provision in California. The California Supreme Court refuses to hear the case, and it is appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

1987. On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership. The Board “encourages all clubs in the U.S. to give fair and equal consideration to candidates for membership without regard to gender.” The Rotary Club of Marin Sunrise, California (formerly Larkspur Landing), is chartered on 28 May. It becomes the first club after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to have women as charter members. Sylvia Whitlock, of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, becomes the first female Rotary club president.

1988. In November, the RI Board of Directors issues a policy statement recognizing the right of Rotary clubs in Canada to admit female members based on a Canadian law similar to that upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

1989. At its first meeting after the 1987 U.S. Supreme Court decision, the Council on Legislation votes to eliminate the requirement in the RI Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men. Women are welcomed into Rotary clubs around the world.

1990. As of June, there are about 20,200 female Rotarians worldwide

1995. In July, eight women become district governors, the first elected to this role.

2005. Carolyn E. Jones begins her term as the first woman appointed as trustee of The Rotary Foundation, serving from 2005 to 2009.

2007. In July, 63 women begin terms as district governors. Women are members of 25,227 clubs around the world. There are 177,859 female Rotarians.

2008. Catherine Noyer-Riveau begins her term as the first woman elected to the RI Board of Directors. She will continue to serve through June 2010.

2009. There are 187,967 female Rotarians worldwide. Sixty-three serve as district governors.

Milfoil Eradication Project seeks to preserve quality of lake water
Eurasion Milfoil is threatening the crown jewel of our community.
Chris Scholz discussed the Skaneateles Milfoil Eradication project at our meeting September 10, 2009. Scholz is a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Syracuse University and Scholz for the Skaneateles Milfoil Eradication Project.
Skaneateles Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country, if not the world with exceptional water quality, Scholz says. This is high praise coming from a professor who has visited numerous lakes throughout the country and the world
The exceptional water clarity is due to a variety of unique factors including the exceptional depth and volume, the small size of the watershed, the presence of limestone bedrock in the ‘catchment’ area of the lake (which buffers acide rain), the basin’s shape which becomes very deep very quickly to remove pollutants to the very depths of the lake and the relatively modest human impacts over the years compared to a lake such as Onondaga, which has suffered from municipal and industrial impacts.
Eurasian Milfoil is threatening that exceptional water quality. Specifically, the invasive weed traps sediments in and near the shallow shore area decreasing the oxygen levels and increasing the chemical nutrients in the shallow areas causing them to be unsuitable for boating or swimming and causing the water quality to suffer.
Milfoil is an invasive species that was likely transported to the lake by a visiting boater. It has been present on the lake since 1974 but saw a marked expansion from 2001 to 2006. The plant is capable of reproducing very quickly and has spreads to the north and south ends of the lake and to many of the shallow areas of the lake.
The Skaneateles Milfoil Eradication Project has been working for three years to map the incidents of milfoil, develop stragegies to eliminate it and ultimately remove the weed from the lake.
To that end, the project has developed a vacuum system whereby teams of trained scuba divers dive to the lake floor and literal vacuum the weed, roots and all, to a party barge where they are gathered and removed to land and turned into mulch.
The project has removed the weed completely in the areas they have worked and those areas have not experienced any regrowth. So far, milfoil has been removed from a total of 12.5 acres of area. The biggest challenge to the eradication process has been the cost, which would be prohibitive for other lakes. So far, the project cost has exceed $1 million with more than 90 percent of the funds raised from private sources.

Vernak Farms brings new conveniences to country store
Chris and Charlene Vernak had always talked about opening a small community store when they retired.
The Vernaks lived in the Point Pleasant area of the Jersey shore where Chris worked as a financial consultant and Charlene worked as a pharmacist.
But with the area growing ever more congested, the two tired of the rat race and began looking to move to a quieter area where they could raise their children. After studying demographics of several different areas, all of which featured close proximity to water, they settled on the Skanteateles area.
Together, they opened Vernak Farms Country Store in January 2008 on East Lake Road in Borodino just north of the hamlet. Initially, they were looking were looking for more of a country store atmosphere, but as they have grown to know their customers and their community, the focus has shifted to more convenience items such as pizza and sandwiches.
In addition to serving the needs of the Borodino and Spafford, the Vernaks hope the store will be a destination for folks in Skaneatles and the Homer & Scott areas.

News & Notes

Preventing identity theft requires constant guarding of personal info
With the increasingly digital world we live in, all of us are increasingly vulnerable to identity theft.
So says Juanita Williams of the New York State Attorney General’s Office, who addressed our club August 6.
Williams identified some of the primary ways in which identity theft occurs. The first discussed involved gadgets identity thieves have created in which a tiny gadget is placed in a credit card scanner, which can take all of your personal information as soon as the card is swiped.
Another common situation in which identity thieves strike is through fake telephone calls and/or e-mails. With these, the identity thief will call and pretend to be a credit card company, etc. advising falsely that your card was used without your consent as a means of convincing individuals to reveal their personal information. This has also occurred with fake phone calls advising of missed jury duty.
More and more, personal information is stolen via the Internet, almost always involving emails that look legitimate and feature links purportedly to an official site. The link is always to a fraudulent site from which the thieves will steal personal information.
Similarly, identity thieves have stolen identities through mailings of fake sweepstakes and secret shopper awards. Finally, identity theft can occur when stores resell private information.
With the nearly constant threat of identity theft, we must be more careful about sharing our personal informaiton, Williams says.
To combat this threat, the Attorney General’s Office advises all of us to check our credit reports as often as possible. Doing so will give you insight into who is checking your credit and reveal whether there is any fraudulent activity. By checking her credit, Williams discovered that someone had opened a Macy’s Card in her name. Consumers can obtain up th three free credit reports per year by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. Seniors are also able to freeze their credit report, preventing anyone from researching your credit.
Individuals should also be guarded at all times about giving away their personal information. For example, if you sign up for a free raffle at the Great New York State Fair, you can be sure that information will be resold, jeopardizing your identity.
In the event you discover your identity has been compromised, Williams says you can put a quick freeze on yoru credit report to prevent any new accounts being opened. She also advises filing a police report to combat any argument that you consented to the use of your personal information.
Ultimately, however, the thieves are difficult to catch since most operate from remote overseas locations making the problem much more difficult to combat through prevention.

Staging Home for sale leads to higher prices, quicker sales
Nancy Schafer has always loved showcasing homes for sale. What she didn’t know until earlier this year is that she could make a career out of it!
Together with husband and Sunrise member Mark, she has sold six homes, all of which she was able to sell quickly.
After moving to this area, Nancy worked briefly selling Real Estate with Realty USA. But she quickly discovered that her true passion was in preparing the home for sale, or home staging as it is called. After learning about home staging, Nancy enrolled in a course in Philadelphia and earned the Accredited Staging Professional accreditation from StagedHomes.com.
Home sellers can only control two things, Nancy says: the sale price and how the home looks. The general concept of staging a home acknowledges that the way we live in our homes and the way we market them are two different things. As we live in a home we typically accumulate volumes of personal effects that make the house a home. But buyers are typically looking for a move-in condition home that is clutter free and clean, especially in the kitchen and the bathroom.
As an ASP, Nancy will typically de-personalize a home to remove its clutter and allow buyers to fall in love with what they see. Statistics have shown that properly staged homes typically sell for more money and more quickly than those that are placed on the market without this service, Nancy says.
For more information on home staging, visit www.stagedhomes.com.

NEWS & NOTES

Rotary Interview with Jane Goodall
Rotary International News sat down with Dr. Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education, and Conservation, at the 2009 RI Convention in Birmingham, England, to talk about the Roots & Shoots program and working with Rotary. Goodall delivered a keynote address during the fourth plenary session.

RI News: Tell us about the Roots & Shoots program of the Jane Goodall Institute.
Goodall: Roots & Shoots is in 111 countries. It involves young people, from preschool through university. We even have groups with senior citizens and with people in prisons and in refugee camps. They choose three projects to make the world a better place. Firstly, for their own human community, and then for communities in other places — raising funds for tsunami victims, for instance. Secondly, [they choose] a project to help animals, which can be domestic, like volunteering in shelters or raising money for a shelter, or it can be wildlife, such as raising awareness or helping to protect a piece of forest. And thirdly, to protect the environment, or to help the environment. This can be something simple like recycling or collecting trash, or it can be a complex program that runs for several years, such as cleaning a stream, learning about talking to the polluters — not just pulling trash out of the stream but measuring pollution in the water, learning how to write to legislators, and even peaceful demonstration. And we’ve had some amazing success.
RI News: What’s your approach to projects?
Goodall: If you just support health and you’re not concerned about the environment — you can inoculate kids against all kinds of diseases, but if they’re then drinking dirty water and have unhygienic toilets — then you’re wasting your time, aren’t you? We work with women [in projects involving] microcredit, and scholarships to keep girls in school, which means new toilets. Otherwise, they drop out at puberty because it’s unhygienic, and there’s no privacy. I think this holistic view is really important. When we began our TACARE program, which is now involving 24 villages around Gombe, [Tanzania], with outreach to more at the beginning, [they told us], “You must focus. You can’t do health and water and conservation,” but we said that you can’t do just one. There are no other NGOs [nongovernmental organizations] in that part of the world, so we have to find the funds to do it all. And thank goodness we did. It’s now a model. USAID sent 72 of their top field directors to Kigoma to see how we do it.
RI News: What are some ways Rotary and your organization can work together?
Goodall: Our missions are the same: environment, empowering people, better world, peace. I know victims of polio who, for just a small amount of money, their lives would be changed. So we do have a wheelchair project, which is Roots & Shoots [groups] raising money for wheelchairs. If we could extend that to the Rotary youth [programs], and they could help a little bit, we could take that program from Tanzania to other countries where there are so many polio victims crawling about on the floor on hands and knees. It takes so little money. One wheelchair is US$100, locally made. One latrine ranges between $200 and $500, depending on how high up the hillside it is; they’re terribly simple, but that’s keeping girls in school. And as you find all around the world, as women’s education improves, family size tends to drop.
RI News: What’s your message as you travel the world?
Goodall: The main message that we have, for not just the youth but for everyone, is not to forget that every single day you live, you make a difference. You make an impact on the world around you. And, we have a choice. Just think if we got together with Rotary, what a huge difference it could make.

News & Notes

Bookstore owner: buying local helps economy, creates choice
Choosing to bypass the big box in favor of buying local can have a huge impact on our community.
So says Erika Davis, owner of Creekside Books & Coffee on Fennell Street.
In fact, according to the Local First Business Alliance in Grand Rapids, Mich., for every $100 spent at local businesses, it is estimated that $73 stays in the community. By comparison, for every $100 spent at a “national” retailer, just $43 stays local.
Other reasons to buy locally, says Davis, include: embracing the enthusiasm of a local store owner, conserving tax dollars, creating more choice, reducing the environmental impact, nurturing the community, investing in entrepreneurship, fostering uniqueness, creating local jobs and making your community a destination.
To spread the word about the benefits of bypassing the Big Box and shopping locally, Davis has joined the Indie Bound Marketing Initiative, which attempts to educate consumers about the positive impacts from their decision to shop at a locally owned store.

Alaska Club moves to fight hunger
Every second Saturday of the month, members of the Rotary Club of Anchorage East, Alaska, USA, distribute food to families in low-income areas through a mobile food pantry, addressing the area’s increasing need for assistance.
In 2006, the club raised $50,000 to purchase and refurbish an old beer truck for the Food Bank of Alaska. Rotarians have since maintained a strong connection to the project by volunteering once a month to distribute food and funding the maintenance of the vehicle.
The truck made a “magical” transformation from hops to hope, says David Kester, who chairs the effort.
Demand at the mobile food pantry has increased by about 30 percent in the last 18 months, says Susannah Morgan, an Anchorage East club member and executive director for the Food Bank of Alaska, which distributes food six times a week to hundreds of families in Anchorage. The recession has increased the number of people seeking help.
Stocked with a variety of canned goods as well as fresh and frozen produce, the truck delivers enough groceries to last a family a week. The food is donated by farmers, local grocery stores, and other agencies. People can choose the items they want and take home as much as they can carry, says Kester.
Club member and Rotary Foundation Trustee Carolyn E. Jones says volunteering once a month at the pantry gives Rotarians the opportunity to build relationships in the community.
Kester estimates that more than 2 million pounds of food has been distributed since the mobile pantry first started its engine. He says the free groceries help in ways that extend beyond finances.

Literacy Golf outing seeks clubs’ support, offers PGA tourney tickets
The District Literacy Committee will be holding our annual golf tourney to raise needed funds to support our ongoing efforts with the Community Assisted Adult Reader program as well as other literacy efforts around the world.
We would ask for your clubs support in several ways:

-Communicate and encourage club members to register and play in the tourney.
-Ask community members to register and play in the tourney. This would be a good way to identify potential members.
-Directly support the tourney by sponsoring a hole or taking an ad in our event booklet.
-Ask community businesses to take an ad or sponsor the tourney. Sponsorship opportunities are identified in the brochure.
-Donate items that can be used in our raffle or give away at the tourney.

As you know the only funding the Literacy Committee receives for our programs is that which we raise through events such as this. Your support will be greatly appreciated by all those we are helping to improve their lives through improved literacy. We currently sponsor as a district more than 30 adults with tutoring support. As well some of the funds raised will be used to support the Books for the World program.
For more information contact Paul Terwilliger, district literacy chair at 655-2985 (home) or 575-4327 (cell).

Lawnmower Raffle & Pancake Breakfast ticket sales in full force
Paul Frickey and Bob Brown officially kicked off our lawnmower ticket raffle Saturday at the P&C.
Our club is again offering contestants a choice of $1,000 cash or a John Deere lawnmower. The tractor this year features an automatic transmission. Pre-sales are the key to successs so let’s all hit the pavement and make sure we can beat last year’s record-breaking sale!
The Skaneateles Rotary Club has distributed a batch of pancake breakfast tickets to our Club. We are again, as in the past, been asked to sell as many tickets as we can in advance of the breakfast. Unlike evening club members, there is no formal obligation to sell our lot of tickets, however, given how instrumental the evening club was and has been in in making our Winterfest successful, let’s show our gratitude by offering all the assistance we can to make this the best pancake breakfast ever!

Local author, Anthony Gero to introduce his new book, Black Soldiers of New York State.
Anthony Gero, author of the new SUNY Press book Black Soldiers of New York State: A Proud Legacy, will speak about his work and sign copies of the book at Creekside. Gero, a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians, worked for more than ten years on the research for the book, trying to answer the basic question of why these African-Americans would serve a country that denied them the full rights of citizenship. “It is essentially a book about dreams,” said Gero. He also includes this quote from Martin Luther King Jr. in the book, which provides further insight: “If a man hasn’t discovered something he would die for, he isn’t fit to live.”
News & Notes

Bedrock balks Skaneateles Rotarians’ Ballpark Project progress
Skaneateles Rotarians displayed remarkable resilience in the Simms Baseball Field improvement effort last weekend.
What began as a simple, two-day project to repaint posts, install fencing to protect the kids from errant foul balls and replace the aging existing backstop fence was quickly slowed by the presence of granite bedrock packed in shale & silt hardpan, to paraphrase.
In the words of John Hennessy in this week’s Skantarian, himself paraphrasing reported remarks: “The soils and subsurface ground layers turned out to be other than Iowa fertile loam or Long Island sandy stone as it turns out.”
Sunrise Rotarians Mark Schafer and Tom Seeley joined Skaneateles Rotary Club members in hacking away at the enormous boulders to dig posts for the new fences. Sunrise Rotarian Maggie Gilson and her husband John also assisted, primarily in the painting of the existing posts which were re-used.
The project is now expected to be done by Tuesday or Wednesday.
The project was spearheaded by Peter Adams and the work performed under the leadership of onsite general contractor, David Lee. The new fence will significantly improve the look and feel of the field while protecting youth baseball players age 9 to 12, their coaches and spectators from injuries associated with errant baseballs while learning to play ball on the field.

Western Gateway project will offer Western welcome mat to Town
The Western entrance to the Village of Skaneateles will soon offer a much more welcome greeting to motorists.
Acting pursuant to a $324,000.00 federal grant, the Town government has been working to create a better transition from the rural area just west of the town to the commercial and residential section of the town.
When completed, the western gateway will extend the sidewalk from the village line to a point just beyond the Red Apple. New signs will greet visitors welcoming them to our town. The final design for the signs is still pending. The project also hopes to have an additional sign board identifying the various service organizations that are active in town.

Pancake Breakfast Kickoff
The Skaneateles Rotary Club kicks off advance sales for the pancake breakfast this week. Tickets are available for our members. We are again, as in the past, been asked to sell as many tickets as we can in advance of the breakfast. Reminder that the evening club folks were instrumental in making our Winterfest successful. Let’s show our gratitude by offering all the assistance we can to make this the best pancake breakfast ever!

Platoon receives care packages
Below – Private First Class Reusch shows some of the boxes of goodies from Skaneateles received by the platoon in Afghanistan. Reusch, of Michigan, works as an intelligence analyst and is also in charge of all our interpretors. He plan to return to college after completing his service.
